Reports to the VP Patient Care/CNO and receives the technical/medical direction of the Hospital's Pathologists. Responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the activities of personnel engaged in providing diagnostic and therapeutic laboratory services as part of an integrated quality system of patient care both in the Hospital and at outreach facilities. - 4 year / Bachelor's Degree Level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of a Baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology. (Required)
- In lieu of the above education requirements, a combination of experience and education will be considered
- 5+ years: Five to seven years of progressively more responsible experience in various supervisory and laboratory capacities. (Required)
- Develops departmental short and long-term goals in consultation with department Pathologist and the CNO. Develops plans to accomplish agreed-upon goals.
- Develops, secures approval of, and manages a coordinated departmental budget which provides for the attainment of agreed-upon goals in accordance with approved plans. Projects volume, staffing needs, equipment replacement, expected supply usage, and vendor choice, etc.
- Provides the overall administrative direction to ensure efficient and effective delivery of laboratory and related services. Research new methods/procedures to support new approaches to laboratory services. Formulates policy and related procedures for the department and secures appropriate approvals.
- Enforces Hospital-wide and departmental policy and procedures. Interviews, hires, disciplines, and with consultation and approval of Administration, discharges department employees.
- Develops job specific orientation and in-service training programs for departmental personnel. Establishes standards for effective job performance and evaluates staff according to such standards. Counsels employees as necessary. Delegates these responsibilities to supervisory personnel as appropriate.
- Develops an effective department organizational structure including efficient work flow patterns, delineation of duties/responsibilities, productivity standards, suitable staffing levels, appropriate supervision, mechanisms for timely communication of pertinent information, review of daily and other work-related reports
- Develops, implements, documents, and monitors the Performance Improvement and Quality Plans for areas of responsibility. Responsible for departmental compliance with guidelines and standards required by regulatory and accrediting agencies. Investigates and responds to complaints or questions about departmental services and personnel.
- Ensures routine maintenance, cleaning, and repair of departmental equipment. Negotiates service contracts and coordinates inspections. Evaluates new products and equipment and determines their viability for the Hospital's laboratory services. Initiates proper request for preferred products. Obtains and maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment adequate for efficient operations. Ensures proper use of supplies. Serves as liaison with Nursing Services, Medical Staff (in cooperation with Medical Directors), and other departments. Establishes the working rapport to develop cooperation and effectively integrate departmental services with the Hospital's overall patient care delivery systems.
- Promotes/markets departmental services such as through direct selling, health fairs, and community clubs, etc. Remains informed of current knowledge and trends through such activities as continuing education, review of professional literature, and participation in professional organizations. Recommends and institutes appropriate changes and new services as necessary.
