Summary

The Director of Engineering serves as the senior technical leader for the Phasex Boston manufacturing facility and is responsible for the overall engineering strategy, capital project portfolio, process improvement initiatives, facility infrastructure, and technical support of manufacturing operations. This position provides leadership for all engineering activities across production, maintenance, quality, facilities, and expansion projects. The Director of Engineering influences cross-functional teams, manages external engineering resources and contractors, and partners closely with Maintenance, Production, Quality, R&D, and Site Leadership to drive operational excellence, safety, reliability, and business growth.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Execute Capital Projects as they relate to all aspects of the manufacturing facility: production, R&D, Quality, & Facilities
  • Support Production by implementing process changes and modifications.
  • Support Maintenance with troubleshooting issues, particularly as it relates to process and controls.
  • Support all aspects of Facility Maintenance and dealing with & coordinating external trades: electrical, HVAC, plumbing
  • Prepare documentation for Production & Quality Departments such as work instructions, batch records, etc.
  • Develop and execute the site's engineering strategy in alignment with company growth objectives.
  • Create and maintain a multi-year capital improvement roadmap for manufacturing, utilities, infrastructure, safety, and expansion projects.
  • Serve as the primary engineering advisor to site leadership regarding operational performance, technical risks, and investment opportunities.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and process improvements that support productivity, capacity expansion, and operational excellence.
  • Build the foundation for a future engineering team by establishing engineering standards, processes, and talent requirements; with the opportunity to recruit, develop, and lead an internal engineering team, including goal setting and performance management.

Competencies
  • AutoCAD 2D for P&ID & Electrical schematics
  • 3D CAD software skills
  • IT knowledge a plus
  • Knowledge of pressure vessel design and safety systems
  • Ability to thrive in an OKR driven environment
  • Ability to generate fabrication drawings for mechanical elements i.e. milling, turning, welding, CNC, etc. including GD&T
  • Hands on approach to maintenance and troubleshooting

Qualifications

Required:
  • 4-year BS in Engineering (Chemical or Mechanical)
  • Strong understanding of safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements in a manufacturing environment.
  • 7-10 years' experience in chemical processing, facility support role

Preferred:
  • 10+ years of progressive engineering experience within chemical manufacturing, specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, industrial processing, or related industries.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Experience with process automation and controls systems.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration.

Work Environment
  • 80% Office / 20% Production Floor Support

Physical Demands
  • Occasionally accessing ladder / hatchway for roof access
  • Working on equipment in hard to access areas
