Communities of Practice, providing strategic leadership to strengthen member engagement, develop volunteer leaders, and implement governance frameworks, operating models, and best practices that enable communities to thrive and deliver meaningful value to members.
Serving as the primary staff partner to Regional Group leaders and Communities of Practice leaders, the Director provides strategic direction, governance leadership, volunteer development, and operational guidance that empowers volunteer leaders to successfully lead their communities. Working collaboratively across the organization, the Director ensures CLOC's community strategy aligns with organizational priorities while fostering a consistent, high-quality experience for members and volunteers.
Key ResponsibilitiesCommunity Strategy & Governance (30%) - Execute CLOC's community strategy by translating strategic priorities into scalable programs, processes, and volunteer engagement initiatives.
- Implement and continuously enhance governance frameworks, operating models, policies, and best practices to ensure consistent, scalable, and effective volunteer-led communities.
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with Regional Group leaders, Communities of Practice leaders, members, and key stakeholders.
- Monitor community health through engagement metrics, participation trends, and member feedback, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and sustainable growth.
- Represent CLOC at conferences, regional events, and industry gatherings, serving as an ambassador for the organization's community strategy and mission.
Volunteer Leadership & Community Development (30%) - Recruit, onboard, coach, and support Regional Group leaders and Communities of Practice leaders, providing the tools, resources, and guidance needed for success.
- Develop volunteer leadership pathways, succession planning strategies, and recognition programs that strengthen long-term volunteer engagement.
- Partner with volunteer leaders to develop annual plans, establish priorities, and align community initiatives with CLOC's strategic objectives.
- Provide strategic consultation and ongoing guidance to volunteer leaders, fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and consistency across communities.
- Cultivate an inclusive volunteer experience that encourages leadership development, innovation, and sustained engagement.
Community Experience & Growth (20%) - Partner with volunteer leaders to deliver meaningful educational, networking, and peer-to-peer engagement opportunities that enhance the member experience.
- Collaborate with internal partners to promote community initiatives and increase awareness, participation, and engagement.
- Gather and analyze member and volunteer feedback to inform strategy and continuously improve the community experience.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen member engagement, expand community participation, and increase volunteer impact.
- Promote collaboration across Regional Groups and Communities of Practice to encourage knowledge sharing and strengthen CLOC's global community network.
Cross-Functional Partnership & Operational Excellence (20%) - Partner across the organization to ensure community initiatives are aligned with CLOC's strategic priorities and member experience goals.
- Develop scalable processes, documentation, and operational standards that support sustainable community growth.
- Monitor community performance through key metrics and organizational goals, providing recommendations and strategic insights to senior leadership.
- Provide strategic recommendations to senior leadership based on community performance, volunteer feedback, emerging trends, and evolving member needs.
- Lead community-related initiatives and special projects that advance CLOC's volunteer and community strategy.
Qualifications - 8+ years of experience in community engagement, volunteer management, or member relations, preferably in a nonprofit or association setting.
- Proven success in developing and executing engagement strategies across diverse regions and audiences.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and foster connection.
- Experience managing volunteers, contractors, and cross-functional projects.
- Familiarity with CRM systems, online community platforms, and member engagement tools.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills, with attention to detail and follow-through.
- Commitment to inclusion, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree or certification in nonprofit management, communications, or related field preferred.
- Willingness and ability to travel approximately 20%, including domestic and occasional international travel.
