Position Summary

The Director of Clinical Education and Professional Development provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for nursing education, professional development, simulation, and clinical competency programs across Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. This role is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive, systemwide education strategy that advances workforce readiness, clinical excellence, professional growth, and organizational performance.

The Director leads a multidisciplinary education team that delivers 24/7 educational support through evidence-based onboarding, transition-to-practice programs, nurse residency, continuing professional development, simulation-based learning, and competency management initiatives. The position collaborates with nursing, operational, and multidisciplinary leaders to establish standardized educational practices, align workforce development initiatives with organizational priorities, and ensure the achievement of systemwide quality, safety, and patient care outcomes.

Through strategic planning, resource management, performance evaluation, and continuous improvement methodologies, the Director drives innovation in clinical education, fosters professional practice advancement, and develops a highly skilled nursing workforce across multiple campuses, service lines, and care settings.

• Provides strategic leadership and governance for nursing clinical education, professional development, competency management, and simulation programs across SRHS, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, workforce strategies, regulatory requirements, and quality outcomes.
• Directs a systemwide nursing clinical education infrastructure that delivers 24/7 educational support, ensuring consistent, scalable, and sustainable educational resources across all campuses, service lines, and care settings.
• Leads the design, implementation, standardization, and continuous improvement of onboarding, nursing orientation, transition-to-practice, and professional development programs that support workforce readiness, retention, engagement, and clinical excellence.
• Establishes and oversees systemwide strategies for nursing orientation and workforce integration for all nursing roles, ensuring consistent associate experience and successful transition into practice.
• Provides oversight for the Transition-to-Practice Nurse Residency Program and specialty pathway initiatives, including curriculum governance, accreditation compliance, outcome measurement, and alignment with workforce development goals.
• Directs the operations of simulation-based education programs, ensuring the effective use of innovative learning methodologies to enhance clinical competency, patient safety, team performance, and organizational preparedness.
• Partners with operational, clinical, and interdisciplinary leaders to identify education needs, drive organizational change initiatives, and implement education strategies that support systemwide priorities, quality improvement efforts, and technology adoption.
• Establishes system standards for clinical competencies, skills validation, competency assessment, and educational documentation, ensuring compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and professional practice requirements.
• Leverages workforce, quality, patient safety, and educational outcome data to evaluate program effectiveness, identify performance gaps, measure return on investment, and drive evidence-based improvements in clinical practice and professional development.
• Promotes a culture of evidence-based practice, lifelong learning and professional growth by integrating emerging research, best practices, and industry standards into educational and professional development initiatives.
• Develops and manages operational and capital budgets for clinical education and simulation programs, ensuring fiscal stewardship, resource optimization, and alignment with organizational and workforce development priorities.
