Job Summary
The University of Michigan seeks an experienced compliance administrator to lead the institutional Animal Care and Use Compliance program. The Director provides strategic leadership for compliance oversight involving animals in research, teaching, and testing while fostering a collaborative, service-oriented environment that supports faculty and the research community.
Responsibilities*
Provide strategic leadership for the Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP).
Provide administrative oversight for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
Lead development and implementation of institutional policies, procedures, and operational frameworks supporting animal research compliance.
Oversee protocol submission, review, approval, amendments, continuing review, and post-approval monitoring.
Lead AAALAC International accreditation activities and USDA/OLAW inspections and responses.
Coordinate institutional reporting to regulatory and accreditation agencies.
Direct quality assurance, education, outreach, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Provide leadership for professional staff, organizational planning, budgeting, and strategic planning.
Serve as the University's primary administrative liaison regarding animal research compliance.
Required Qualifications*
Educational experience generally associated with a Master's degree or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Certification as a Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA) desirable or attainment within one year of eligibility.
Extensive knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act Regulations, PHS Policy, Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, AAALAC International expectations, and related standards.
Experience leading AAALAC accreditation activities.
Strong commitment to animal welfare.
Effective management and interpersonal skills, including budget preparation and management, personnel management, demonstrated ability to hire and train new staff, and the ability to motivate and retain professional staff. Five (5) or more years of supervisory experience required, preferably within an academic environment.
At least 10 years' experience related to research or research compliance administration in a university setting.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information.
Ability to think strategically, analyze complex issues, and present sound recommendations.
Ability to mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach.
Ability to work effectively independently and as a member of a team.
