Stony Brook University Libraries seeks a visionary, collaborative, and data-informed leader with excellent communication skills to provide strategic direction, operational leadership, and organizational oversight for Access Services, ensuring seamless, equitable, and reliable access to library collections, services, and spaces in support of world-class research, teaching, and learning.

The Director leads a complex, multi-functional service portfolio that typically includes circulation, interlibrary loan and document delivery, course reserves (physical and digital), stacks management, patron account services, and related user-facing operations. The role also oversees service desks, student employee programs, equipment or technology lending, and library facilities coordination among multiple locations.

This role is both operational and transformational, requiring a leader who can maintain high-quality day-to-day service delivery while advancing long-term innovation.

The Director will help shape the future of access services through service redesign, assessment, automation, analytics, and emerging technologies, including AI, where they can improve services and staff workflows. As a member of the library's leadership team, the Director contributes to strategic planning, organizational effectiveness, policy development, change leadership, and cross-campus collaboration in support of the University's research, teaching, and learning mission.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide long-range strategic leadership for Access Services by applying systems thinking and leading organizational change to align services with institutional and library priorities. Advance service innovation, policy development, emergency planning and response, and organizational effectiveness in response to evolving research needs, user expectations, and scholarly communication trends.
  • Direct core operations including circulation,resource sharing, course reserves, stacks management, service desks, and patron services. Ensure reliable, equitable, and continuous access to collections across physical, digital, and remote environments.
  • Lead administration and optimization of integrated library systems (ILS/LSP) and related access technologies (e.g., Alma, ILLiad, etc.). Partner with Digital Services to enhance discovery, fulfillment, resource sharing, and user access through automation and emerging technologies, including AI-enabled workflows.
  • Ensure Access Services policies and operations comply with copyright, privacy, accessibility, and other applicable laws, regulations, and institutional policies.
  • Design and lead assessment strategies using qualitative and quantitative data to evaluate collection assessment projects, service effectiveness, user experience, and operational performance. Use assessment findings to drive continuous evaluation and improvement, planning, decision-making, and leadership reporting.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets, staffing models, and resource allocation. Identify efficiencies and align financial, technological, and human resources with strategic service priorities.
  • Supervise professional staff and student employees. Lead recruitment, training, performance management, and professional development while fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and change-ready workplace culture.
  • Partner with academic units, IT, student services, and administrative departments to enhance user experience. Represent the library in consortial, regional, and national initiatives related to access services and resource sharing.
  • Contribute to library leadership governance and strategic initiatives. Engage in professional organizations, scholarship, presentations, and service, with emphasis on advancing access services in research library contexts.


Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's or advanced degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in a relevant field, with a combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of this position
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in an academic or research library.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience managing complex access services library operations and initiatives.
  • Record of professional activities, including scholarly activities, presentations, or engagement in professional organizations, demonstrating the potential to meet the Libraries' requirements for promotion and tenure.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in a major research university library.
  • Experience managing large-scale or multi-location access services operations.
  • Familiarity with resource sharing, consortial borrowing systems, shared print repositories, or other multi-institution environments.
  • Experience applying technology, workflow automation, data analytics, or emerging technologies, including AI, to improve library operations and services.

For this position, we are unable to sponsor candidates for work visas. This is a tenure-track position.
