Full Job Description
SUMMARY: The Technical Development Director, as part of the sales and business development team, drives the strategic vision of the operational sales activities related to business unit revenue growth through technical innovation. This position manages support functions essential to component MRO growth and is responsible for the overall effectiveness of repair capability development in the company's component operations. The Technical Development Director works with internal and external stakeholders on technical solution-based sales.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develops technical proposals in partnership with other sales team personnel and operations aimed at expanding capability and saving material costs within repair schemes. Co-leads the Business Unit capability development programs with Business Unit Engineering and Operations.
    • Acts as the weekly co-leader of the components Cost War Room.
    • Walks the home shop frequently, checking scrap racks, interviewing mechanics informally, and collaborating on ways to improve material consumption rates.
    • Interrogates piece part consumption data.
    • Identifies opportunities for cost-savings through engineering.
    • Partners with internal and external repair engineers including Designated Engineering Reps (DERs).
    • Partners with the Director of Sales Operations during RFPs to review demand data and part descriptions to examine high demand items for development.
    • Reviews periodic demand and pricing data from other business units to help identify items for development.
    • Keeps important Service Bulletins and Airworthiness Directives (SBs and ADs) at the forefront of inputs to the process.
    • Reviews sales data using the Capability Development Portal to investigate sales opportunities.
    • Provides suggestions for CAPDEV campaigns (ATAs, fleets, systems, etc.)
    • Leads new fleet capability strategies.
  • Leads capability rationalization and new product development strategy across the business units.
  • Assigns technical development objectives to team and ensures achievement of goals.
  • Proactively identifies opportunities for capability development process improvement. Develops and implements changes needed.
  • Develops, drives and executes core competency growth strategies. Ensures the adoption of strategies across the department and all business units.
  • Administers, manages and directs sales team usage of repair development and capability development tracking tools.
  • Plays a key role in capital budgeting and forecasting.
  • Collaborates with SVP, Commercial and business unit operations on design and implementation of strategic capability development planning.
  • Builds peer support and develops strong internal company relationships with other key management personnel.
  • Responsible for identifying and understanding technical trends within the industry. Pursues opportunities that increase sales volumes for the business and monitors prospective markets and consumers.


OTHER DUTIES:
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

AUTHORITY:

This position is prohibited from performing any safety sensitive functions to include the accomplishment or direct supervision of the following:
  • Aircraft maintenance - This includes inspection, overhaul, repair, preservation, and the replacement of parts.
  • Aircraft preventive maintenance - This includes simple or minor preservation operations and the replacement of small standard parts.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Carries out managerial responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, interviewing; providing guidance; coaching and developing employees; planning and assigning work for direct reports; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITY:

Fully and actively supports ATS policies in all areas of educating, preventing and managing safety in the workplace. This includes observing all company, health, safety and environmental rules, ensuring that employees are provided with full information on area specific safety orientation, identify all unique hazards, and employees are provided with the proper equipment to carry out their jobs in a safe manner. Also, the entire work area must be routinely inspected to maintain a high standard of housekeeping and low incidence of physical hazards and all accidents must be promptly reported.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering or related technical/business field and a minimum of ten (10) years' experience in a related field including a minimum of five (5) years technical development or sales engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of extensive training and experience.
  • Experience within the aircraft market, with ties to major U.S. carriers.
  • Experience with developing strategic plans and technical development strategies.


PHYSICAL EFFORT AND DEXTERITY:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to sit, stand and walk; use their hands and arms; and talk or hear; and focus on objects close up. The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

ENVIRONMENT:

Normal business office conditions generally prevail. The noise level is usually low to moderate. Employee may be working in a cubicle, enclosed office, or open area. Floor may be carpeted or bare.
