About the Role: Reporting to the VP, Payroll & Benefits, the Director of Payroll and Benefits leads the strategy, administration, and compliance of all payroll and employee benefits programs. This role ensures accurate, timely payroll processing while designing competitive, cost-effective benefits that support employee well-being and organizational goals.
Your Focus in this Role: Payroll Leadership
- Oversee end-to-end payroll operations for all employees (province/multi-state)
- Ensure accurate and timely payroll processing, including wages, bonuses, commissions, and deductions
- Maintain compliance with federal, provincial/state, and local payroll regulations and tax laws
- Manage payroll systems, audits, reporting, and reconciliations
- Lead payroll-related year-end activities (e.g., tax forms such as T4s, W-2s)
- Develop and implement payroll policies, controls, and process improvements
Benefits Strategy & Administration
- Implement, and manage employee benefits programs (health, dental, retirement, disability, wellness, etc.)
- Evaluate and benchmark benefits offerings to remain competitive
- Lead annual benefits renewal and open enrollment processes
- Manage relationships with brokers, vendors, and insurance providers
- Monitor benefits costs and develop cost-containment strategies
- Ensure compliance with applicable benefits regulations (e.g., ERISA, ACA, or Canadian equivalents)
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with all payroll and benefits laws and regulations
- Stay current on legislative changes and adjust programs accordingly
- Lead internal and external audits related to payroll and benefits
- Maintain accurate records and reporting
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop payroll and benefits team members
- Set goals, manage performance, and foster a high-performance culture
- Collaborate with HR, Finance, and Legal teams
Systems & Data Management
- Oversee HRIS/payroll systems and integrations
- Ensure data accuracy, security, and confidentiality
- Leverage data analytics to inform decision-making and reporting

Education, Experience and Skills:- 7-10+ years of progressive experience in payroll, benefits administration
- Experience with tax regulations, payroll deductions, retirement plans, and leave management programs
- Knowledge in employment standards and labor laws
- Experience in budgeting and financial analysis
- Several years of leadership or management experience supervising payroll and benefits teams
- Experience with large-scale payroll systems and benefits programs
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) is preferred
- Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) or Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) in Canada is preferred
