Position Summary

The Development Director is responsible for leading the Port Angeles Food Bank's fundraising efforts with a primary focus on major gifts, planned giving, donor stewardship, and long-term philanthropic growth.

This position serves as the organization's lead fundraiser and manages a portfolio of major donors and prospects capable of making gifts of $1,000 or more annually, with a focus on growing donors into leadership-level giving of $5,000 and above. The Development Director will lead efforts related to major gifts, the Port Angeles Food Bank Legacy Fund, planned giving, and donor engagement strategies that strengthen long-term financial sustainability.

The Development Director supervises the Director of Donor Experience and the Grant Writer, providing strategic oversight of annual giving, donor communications, stewardship, grants, campaigns, and donor engagement activities.

Success in this role is measured through growth in major gift revenue, donor retention, planned giving commitments, Legacy Fund growth, and overall fundraising performance.

Essential Responsibilities

Major Gifts and Donor Relations

• Manage a portfolio of approximately 100-150 major donor prospects and current donors.
• Develop and implement cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for major donors.
• Conduct donor visits, calls, tours, and engagement activities.
• Grow donors from annual gifts of $1,000+ into leadership gifts of $5,000+ and beyond.
• Prepare and present major gift proposals.
• Partner with the Executive Director on gifts and proposals of $25,000 and above.
• Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donor prospects.

Legacy Fund and Planned Giving

• Lead development and growth of the Port Angeles Food Bank Legacy Fund.
• Build relationships with planned giving prospects.
• Conduct planned giving and legacy gift conversations.
• Develop strategies to secure bequests, beneficiary designations, and other planned gifts.
• Steward and recognize legacy donors.

Fund Development Leadership

• Lead implementation of the organization's fundraising strategy.
• Collaborate with the Executive Director on fundraising goals and priorities.
• Monitor fundraising performance and key metrics.
• Support board engagement in fundraising activities.
• Foster a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization.

Staff Leadership and Supervision

• Supervise and support the Director of Donor Experience & Engagement.
• Supervise and support the Grant Writer.
• Provide strategic direction for annual giving, donor communications, stewardship, and grant development.
• Coordinate fundraising activities across the development team.
• Promote collaboration, accountability, and professional growth among development staff.

Community and Organizational Engagement

• Represent the organization professionally in the community.
• Participate in donor events and engagement activities.
• Collaborate with staff to connect donor interests with organizational needs.
• Support a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization.

Performance Expectations

During the first year, the Development Director is expected to:

• Maintain a qualified portfolio of 100-150 donors and prospects.
• Complete at least 75 donor visits or substantive meetings annually.
• Increase the number of donors giving $5,000 or more annually.
• Identify and qualify at least 20 new major gift prospects.
• Conduct a minimum of 10 planned giving or legacy gift conversations annually.
• Build and actively manage a Legacy Fund prospect pipeline.
• Support solicitation and stewardship efforts for gifts of $25,000 and above.
• Maintain complete and timely donor documentation.

Qualifications

Required

• Three or more years of experience in fundraising, sales, business development, relationship management, or a related field.
• Demonstrated success building and managing relationships.
• Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Excellent organization and project management skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
• Proficiency with CRM systems and Microsoft Office.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Preferred

• Major gifts fundraising experience.
• Planned giving or legacy fundraising experience.
• Experience managing donor portfolios.
• CFRE credential or progress toward certification.
• Familiarity with food banking, hunger relief, or human services organizations.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range: $80,000-$85,000 annually, DOE.
