WORK LOCATION
• This position will be located in Birmingham, AL.
• This position will require a mix of both field and office work.
• Field work can include site visits to various generating facilities and may require overnight travel.
• Some office work can be performed remotely (telework/work from home).

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for mechanical design work and preparation of deliverables to support Southern Company's Mechanical Design Group for new generation projects and retrofit projects at generating plants for Southern Company Generation with an emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, costs, and customer satisfaction. The position will require some travel (approximately 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service. Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education
• High school graduate or equivalent. Additional technical training is preferred (technical school or software provider).

Experience
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in the design of new construction and power generation facility retrofit projects or similar heavy industrial facilities.
• 3D modeling experience or ability to learn 3D software. Autodesk Plant 3D modeling experience and proficiency is highly desired.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Make SAFETY our number one priority using a "Safety First" mentality and leading by example.
• Must have the ability to work as a leader or team member to prepare high quality design packages needed to construct (new or modify existing) mechanical systems and facilities using CAD-based tools, based on Southern Company design standards.
• The Senior Designer in the Mechanical Engineering Group shall develop, prepare, check, and coordinate designs, design drawings, and other documents required for plant mechanical systems or components according to applicable codes and standards. The individual shall possess a solid understanding of 3D CAD modeling and piping design techniques. The designer will be expected to perform site walkdowns and assessments on an as needed basis to support design efforts. The designer will be responsible for preparing and overseeing mechanical power system design including P&IDs, piping isometrics, general arrangement drawings, and equipment or commodity specifications. This candidate should be thoroughly familiar with piping design including a solid working knowledge of applicable ANSI or ASME codes and standards.
• Develop scope definition, provide schedule input, create material takeoffs, and review fabrication drawings.
• Coordinate work with other disciplines, clients, suppliers, and contractors.
• Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company personnel to resolve standards and material issues.
• Review and coordinate vendor design document reviews to ensure conformance to design requirements.
• Provide support to Discipline Leads, Construction Services, Field Services, Project Management, Startup and Site Personnel.
• Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, during construction and post-construction. Assist with system checkout and startup when necessary. Some overnight travel will be required.
• Participate in design review meetings.
• Provide work direction and oversight for junior designers and drafters.
• Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, setting priorities, and using effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.
• Ability to adapt to changing project requirements and customer needs.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Possess abilities to conduct design functions and discipline scope management with little or no supervision.
• Detailed knowledge of mechanical engineering drawing principles and preparation of deliverables.
• Extensive AutoCAD and 3D modeling software experience. Ability to learn new 3D design and business unit software.
• Take the lead role for detailed design activities.
• Ability to apply value-added solutions.
• Detailed knowledge of cost estimating and quantity takeoffs.
• Detailed knowledge of construction methods, equipment, techniques and associated costs.
• Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and apply design criteria and government regulations to design and construction drawings.
• Ability to make independent decisions with minimal information and little consultation with management is required.
• Proficient in problem solving, analytical, and interpersonal communications skills.
• Understands the value T&PS brings to the OpCos and plants.

o Computer skills to be proficient with standard office software applications

o Must be a self-starter and exhibit strong problem-solving skills.

o Must demonstrate excellent communication skills (oral & written) and the ability to communicate technical issues simply.
