The Design Manager is a valued member of the Communications, Marketing and Engagement team for UT’s Operational Services and Strategies (OSS) portfolio led by the VP of Operations. It reports to the Executive Director of Branding and Marketing, support design and multimedia activities and initiatives across the OSS portfolio, which includes Campus Operations and Planning, Campus Services, Central HR, Discovery to Impact, Real Estate Planning and Strategy, Texas Institute for Electronics, and University Housing and Dining.

Purpose

The Design Manager develops creative, goal-driven design solutions for projects across the Communications, Marketing and Engagement team for UT’s Operational Services and Strategies (OSS) portfolio under the VP of Operations. This role ensures visual continuity and alignment with the UT Austin brand across multiple initiatives and excels at developing and producing high-quality designs and materials while working collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure alignment with project goals. The ideal candidate is creative, detail-oriented, has excellent communication skills, and can balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. 

Responsibilities
  • Creative Strategy: Translate creative briefs and business objectives into high-impact design concepts that resonate with audiences and help drive the brand forward.
  • Project Ownership: Manage the design project lifecycle from research and ideation through production and approvals to final delivery.
  • Brand Stewardship: Protect and champion the University’s brand identity, ensuring that all materials follow established standards.
  • Mentorship: Guide and provide constructive feedback to design interns and communicators across the portfolio to help elevate the overall quality and skill of the team.
  • Collaboration: Work with peers across Communications, Marketing and Engagement and functional units and departments to develop effective materials to support marketing and communication goals.
  • Stakeholder Presentations: Confidently present concepts and design rationale to leadership, internal stakeholders and cross-functional teams.
  • Execution & Production: Produce high-quality digital and print deliverables suitable for multiple channels and ensure all files are accurate and ready for production.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in art, design, photography, film/video or related field.
  • 5-7 years of related design, branding, print production, and digital production experience.
  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PPT, etc.).
  • Fluency with digital and social media platforms.
  • Experience working with content management systems, such as Drupal and WordPress, or similar platforms.
  • Ability to multitask effectively and work cooperatively with others.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Audition, Lightroom or other Adobe Creative Suite applications.
  • Experience with videography, video editing, photography, and audio editing.
  • Experience with email marketing systems, such as Emma and Mailchimp, or similar platforms.
  • Experience managing projects and tracking work through project management tools (e.g., Asana).

Salary Range

$85,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

This is an on-site, full-time position at the UT main campus with occasional work at other UT locations.
