Description
About the Position:

The Deputy State Fire Marshal (DSFM) Inspector in this position is responsible for completing fire and life safety inspections of state licensed facilities, including nursing homes, hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, assisted living facilities, group homes, residential treatment facilities, enhanced services facilities, childcare facilities and schools throughout the State of Washington. Provide training, education and information when required and conduct acceptance inspection in support of the plan review program. This position reports to a Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal in the Fire Prevention Division.

Duties
Responsibilities:
  • Perform fire and life safety inspections of residential and health care facilities, childcare, and group homes to ensure compliance with state and/or federal laws and codes.
  • Perform construction inspections to ensure compliance with applicable fire and building codes in support of the Bureau plan review program.
  • Assists in the development and presentation of fire safety and prevention programs to reduce fires within the State of Washington.
  • Develop a working partnership with jurisdiction within the assigned geographic area for the duties assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted Washington State Driver's License or able to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
  • High school diploma/ GED equivalent.
  • Two years of experience as a fire prevention officer, code enforcement officer: or insurance industry inspector.
  • Due to the nature of the duties assigned, eligible candidates will be able to effectively read, write, and verbally communicate in English to internal and external customers regarding inspection results and/or safety concerns.
  • Organization and time management skills; knowledge and ability to apply state construction methods and materials.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment polygraph examination and background investigation.
  • You must submit a current cover letter when you apply.
  • Must complete within 1st year of employment: ICC Fire inspector 1 and 2, ICC Fire Plans Examiner, IFSAC Fire Instructor I, IFSAC Fire Inspector I or NFPA Fire Inspector I. (IFSAC Fire Inspector I or NFPA Fire Inspector I is a pre-requisite for attending CMS Life Safety Code.)
  • CMS Life Safety Code certification will be earned within two years of employment, or as deemed necessary by the supervisor to meet business needs.
  • There may be additional pre-requisites the employee is required to complete and/or attain prior to becoming certified.
