About the Role

Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer as a member of the GL&C Executive Leadership Team, you will lead GL&C's Litigation Group — a team of 65–70 attorneys, paralegals, eDiscovery specialists, and litigation support professionals — setting strategic direction, work priorities, performance standards, and talent development objectives. 

You will provide enterprise-wide oversight of corporate litigation, with particular focus on bad faith and extra-contractual matters, class actions, coverage disputes, employment, investments, bankruptcies, and other high-exposure or emerging risks. Serving as a protector and defender of the enterprise, you will deliver efficient, insight-driven outcomes that strengthen risk selection, surface trends proactively, and support favorable financial performance. 

You will provide senior legal counsel on the company's highest-stakes matters, advising and presenting to the CEO, business line presidents, executive leadership, the Board of Directors, and external auditors — and partnering closely with business leaders to align legal strategy with business objectives. 

Key partners include: GL&C Leadership Team; senior executive leadership across our business units (Global Risk Solutions, US Retail Markets, Investments); and senior executive leadership across corporate functions (People, Purpose & Brand, Technology, Finance, and Strategy). 

What You'll Do 

• Own enterprise litigation strategy and emerging litigation risk. Lead and oversee the company's highest-exposure and most consequential litigation portfolio, defining strategy on matters with cross-portfolio, multi-jurisdictional consequence. 

• Lead an integrated, product-focused litigation capability. Direct the Auto, Property, Liability & Specialty Claims, and Complex & Emerging Litigation teams, along with our centralized Litigation Support organization, to deliver consistent, high-quality, and appropriately calibrated case and matter management. 

• Drive work evolution and technology adoption. Partner with Performance & Execution to advance AI-enabled practices, paralegal leverage, shared services, and other delivery model changes that improve productivity, cycle time, quality, and outcomes. 

• Deliver portfolio intelligence and enterprise value. Translate litigation trends, claim patterns, regulatory activity, and case outcomes into actionable insights that inform underwriting, claims, product development, business strategy, and proactive enterprise risk management. 

• Build organizational strength, talent, and governance. Develop a diverse talent pipeline and succession bench, coach leaders and legal professionals, establish clear decision rights, manage financial performance, and contribute to GL&C's enterprise-wide strategic direction. 

What You'll Bring 

• Enterprise litigation strategy, advocacy, and risk judgment. Demonstrated expertise in strategy, judgment, and advocacy across bad faith, class action, complex commercial, and other high-exposure matters, including courtroom, arbitration, and appellate experience. You can assess and stratify litigation exposure across a complex docket, prioritize resources, inform reserving decisions, and balance legal risk with commercial outcomes. 

• Strategic business acumen and executive influence. You translate complex legal and litigation risk into practical business choices, synthesize portfolio-level signals and litigation analytics into intelligence that informs business strategy rather than just case-level outcomes, and deliver concise, decision-ready advice to senior executives. You represent litigation at the GL&C leadership table and across the enterprise with clarity and confidence. 

• Strategic vision with practical grounding. You translate ambition into concrete milestones, resourcing decisions, and measurable outcomes — setting goals and objectives, overseeing litigation operations and resources, and driving measurable improvement in the speed, quality, consistency, and cost-effectiveness of legal advice and litigation strategy. 

• People leadership, workforce development, and succession planning. A proven track record building, leading, coaching, and retaining high-performing legal teams. You build a pipeline that combines emerging legal talent, deep litigation expertise, and ready-now leadership succession, treating diversity of background, perspective, and experience as a deliberate input to bench strength. You are skilled at shaping team focus and structure while protecting workflow continuity, quality, and engagement. 

• Change leadership and technology fluency. You approach work evolution as a leadership obligation, challenging resistance directly and earning the right to lead change through results. You bring an AI-native mindset — understanding how generative and agentic AI reshape litigation delivery — and a demonstrated ability to champion the responsible adoption of AI, automation, litigation technology, and analytics to improve decision-making, work quality, efficiency, and cost to serve. 

• J.D. or LL.M. and admission to the bar of at least one U.S. jurisdiction (required) 

• 15+ years of experience as a practicing attorney, including significant complex litigation and people leadership experience (required)

• Demonstrated experience leading through organizational change, delivery model transformation, and AI-enabled work evolution (strongly preferred) 

Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role isdeterminedbya number offactors including skills, experience, education,certificationsand location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market andprovidesan opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factorsset forth inthe compensation plan for the role.
