Summary

The Deputy Director of Sales provides strategic leadership, daily management, and performance oversight for Safari Club International's Sales Department. This position is responsible for maximizing revenue across SCI's portfolio of print and digital publications, corporate sponsorships, convention sponsorships, and other commercial opportunities. The Deputy Director manages and supports the sales team throughout the complete sales cycle-from prospecting and proposal development through contracting, fulfillment, renewal, invoicing coordination, and performance reporting. The position also supports sales initiatives for the Texas Trophy Hunters Association (TTHA), Cinegética, and other affiliated organizations, events, and strategic partnerships. Working closely with executive leadership and the Convention, Publications, Marketing, Finance, Membership, and Legal teams, the Deputy Director of Sales develops integrated revenue strategies that advance SCI's organizational goals and mission of protecting the freedom to hunt and promoting wildlife conservation worldwide.

All applicants should demonstrate support of SCI's "First for Hunters" mission, including: advocacy for legal, regulated hunting as a vital wildlife management tool, an appreciation of Second Amendment freedoms as they relate to hunting and the shooting sports, and strong knowledge of the hunting and shooting industry, including an understanding of firearm and archery products, ammunition, optics and gear.

Responsibilities

  • Directs all aspects of SCI's advertising sales operations, including revenue development, account management, advertising fulfillment, billing coordination, and departmental performance.
  • Leads and manages advertising sales and support staff. Responsibilities include recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, training, assigning work, establishing performance expectations, conducting performance evaluations, recognizing achievement, resolving employee concerns, and addressing disciplinary or performance matters in coordination with Human Resources.
  • Sells print and digital advertising across SCI publications and media platforms. Develops new business, manages existing advertiser relationships, follows up on leads generated through industry publications, trade shows, conventions, referrals, and inbound inquiries, and identifies opportunities to expand advertising revenue.
  • Oversees the production, placement, and fulfillment of advertisements. Prepares insertion orders, obtains advertising materials, and coordinates the development of copy, photography, artwork, and layout with SCI's Art Department, Publications Department, Marketing Department, or approved outside contractors.
  • Provides advertising proofs to clients, secures required approvals, monitors production deadlines, and ensures advertisements are delivered accurately and according to contractual specifications.
  • Coordinates advertiser billing and accounts-receivable activities with the Accounting Department. Reviews account status and aging reports, follows up on outstanding balances, resolves billing discrepancies, and refers delinquent accounts for collection when appropriate.
  • Ensures all advertising orders, contracts, placement instructions, billing information, and customer records are accurately entered and maintained in SCI's designated accounting and customer-relationship management systems.
  • Manages advertising placement within the page plan for each issue of SAFARI Magazine, and Safari Times, The SCI Convention Directory and Convention Dailies, coordinating with the Director of Publications and production team to ensure proper positioning, inventory management, and fulfillment of advertiser commitments.
  • Represents SCI at national trade shows, conventions, outfitter and guide association meetings, and other industry events to solicit advertising, develop relationships, generate qualified leads, and strengthen SCI's presence within the outdoor industry.
  • Plans advertising sales activities associated with trade shows and industry events, including developing sales strategies, coordinating promotional materials and shipping, scheduling booth personnel, and arranging necessary travel and accommodations.
  • Develops and maintains media kits, advertising rate cards, sales presentations, promotional materials, and special-publication opportunities, including convention publications, awards issues, auction-related materials, and other revenue-generating products.
  • Advises senior leadership and the Director of Publications on advertising trends, market conditions, pricing strategies, product development, and opportunities to increase print and digital advertising revenue.
  • Assists with the preparation of the department's annual budget, revenue projections, sales forecasts, and future business plans. Recommends expenditures and resource allocations that support organizational priorities and maximize return on investment.
  • Monitors departmental expenses and financial performance throughout the year, identifies variances from budget, and recommends appropriate corrective action.
  • Establishes measurable sales goals, monitors performance against established targets, and prepares regular reports regarding revenue, pipeline activity, renewals, new business, account status, and sales forecasts.
  • Maintains strong relationships with advertisers, sponsors, exhibitors, agencies, industry partners, and internal departments while ensuring a high level of service and professional representation of SCI.
  • Ensures advertising sales activities comply with SCI policies, contractual requirements, publication standards, production schedules, and applicable legal and ethical requirements.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience & Education
  • Associate's degree and 5+ years of experience in marketing, business, advertising, or a related field required.
  • Bachelor's degree and related experience preferred.
  • Previous supervisory or sales management experience required.
  • Must have a valid U.S. Drivers License and the capability to be insured under SCI's policy.

Culture

  • Must be a hunter with extensive knowledge of the shooting sports industry, its products and use of those products. Experience with international hunting is preferred.
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with industry partners, sponsors, members, and stakeholders while serving as a professional representative of the organization.
