Full Job Description
Position Overview

The Deputy Chief Schools Officer (DCSO) develops the capacity of school and system leaders-including instructional coaches, principals, principal managers, regional superintendents, and CEOs-to create and implement equitable and excellent school designs grounded in research-based strategy and a commitment to DEIA.

An Attuned DCSO is motivated to support school and system partners to develop the plans, leadership capacities, and instructional knowledge needed to improve outcomes for historically underserved students, as measured by a set of agreed-upon annual improvement targets. A DCSO leads their partnerships with independence but also draws from a rich bank of Attuned resources and practices. As part of a Chief Schools Officer's team, the DCSOs is assigned a set of school systems or schools to support either independently or as part of a larger project team.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Support the facilitation of strategic and annual planning to ensure partner organizations identify and focus on the highest-leverage practices to drive student outcomes and improve student culture and wellness, teaching and learning, and adult culture, development, and wellness.
    • Partner with other Attuned team members to generate insightful and provocative organizational diagnostics that illuminate the strengths and opportunities of the partner organization, as discerned through an analysis of performance data, an analysis of artifacts, observation of instruction and schoolwide moments, and an analysis of constituent perspective.
    • Partner with an Attuned Chief to develop precise and actionable multi-year strategic plans.
    • Lead annual planning refreshes for partner schools and co-lead annual planning refreshes for partner systems.
    • Partner with schools and systems to set measurable key results.
    • Align all annual implementation supports to focus on achieving key results.
  2. Lead the selection, development, and implementation of consistent materials, foundational systems, and approaches that improve school culture, curriculum, instruction, assessment, and adult development-all through an equity lens.
    • Depending on the partner's needs, the DCSO supports the creation and implementation of foundational systems, including: curriculum adoption of HQIM; social-emotional learning supports; student culture systems, and key instructional enabling systems such as data-driven instruction (DDI), observation and feedback, lesson and unit internalization (LPI/UPI), and high-quality adult learning systems.
    • Support system leaders in developing team-based approaches to progress monitoring, reflection, and action planning to improve implementation of organization-wide systems.
    • Collaborate with other Attuned members, as needed, to ensure school and system partners have access to deep content expertise.
  3. Lead ongoing school-based walkthroughs, feedback, and coaching sessions to ensure priority materials and practices are implemented with quality, cultural responsiveness, and fidelity.
    • Using Attuned's walkthrough tools, deliver regular rounds of observation and feedback of classroom and schoolwide practices.
    • Prep for, deliver, and follow-up on regular coaching to build the pedagogical content knowledge and leadership competencies needed to lead high performing schools and school systems.
    • Facilitate on-site quarterly step backs to assess progress.
  4. Partner across Attuned teams to develop and implement adult learning sessions and tools.
    • Lead structured leadership capacity building opportunities on a range of topics, including lesson design and delivery, lesson and unit internalization, data driven instruction (DDI) cycles, observation and feedback, and PD delivery.
    • Analyze and synthesize school and system practices to support Attuned's ability to create useful resources for the broader field.
  5. Support the growth and development of Attuned.
    • Work in close collaboration with colleagues to develop, continuously improve, and deliver best-in-class services to schools and school systems, investing about 20% of your work week in internal learning and collaboration.
    • Serve as a thought partner to colleagues, help solve a variety of day-to-day challenges, and generate creative solutions for internal and external improvements.
    • Participate in the hiring process to identify diverse, values-aligned, and qualified new team members.
    • Learn about and share evolving education trends and best practices with the team.
    • Identify and help maintain and build new lines of work as the opportunity arises.
