Department Superintendent - Decatur, IL
ADM West Extraction
Job Summary:
The Soybean Extraction Department Superintendent will have direct oversight of hourly employees within a union environment and provide guidance to other salary supervision in the department. This position is also responsible for many of the day-to-day activities as well as long-term planning for the soybean prep and extraction department. Management of a department requires strong skills in the areas of leadership, communication, effective listening and self-motivation as well as all aspects of safety, quality, production, plant goals, cost management and employee development.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Safety of our employees is the top priority of ADM. Ensuring personnel and plant environments are conducive to safe operations is critical.
  • Ensure operations and products manufactured comply with all applicable quality regulatory requirements and laws of all countries to which we are subject.
  • Implementation and management of all aspects of the plant Performance Excellence process.
  • Must rely on their experience, good judgment and planning to ensure effective planning to accomplish goals, implement operational procedures and training as well as to enforce company plans, policies and rules.
  • Able to demonstrate the ability to train and motivate the people they supervise. Including salaried supervision and engineers as well as hourly operations.
  • Ensure planning of maintenance and capital activities and able to adjust operations to support these activities.
  • Able to work effectively with other members of management within the facility.
  • Demonstrate understanding of soybean prep and extraction processes.
  • Ensure effective communication within all levels of the organization, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage employees in a fair, direct and honest manner is required.
  • Fill in and work with other departments as needed, for the common good of the complex.
  • General computer skills and experience working with computer programs, specifically MS Office, is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan strategically for both short- and long-term to achieve department goals is required.
Education/Training:
  • Four-year degree and a minimum of four years of supervisory experience with increasing manufacturing leadership responsibility, or a minimum of 5 years of hands-on, increasing production leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership in safety.
  • Demonstrated coaching and leadership skill.

    • The scope of the position may require exposure to and use of chemicals, solvents, and cleaners that may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal/storage are not properly followed.
  • Inside areas:
    • Spring / Summer: Temperatures in some areas of the facility will be up to or exceed 100 degrees
    • Fall / Winter: Temperatures in the facility may be at or below freezing.
  • Outside areas:
    • Spring / Summer: Outside temperature may be up to or exceed 100 degrees with potential for high humidity. May be exposed to inclement weather conditions including, but not limited to, rain and wind.
    • Fall / Winter: Outside temperatures may reach freezing or below. May be exposed to inclement weather including, freezing rain, sleet, snow and wind.
  • Some manufacturing processes within the facility are highly reliant on machinery and other processing equipment and, as a result, noise levels may reach or exceed 85 decibels and require use of hearing protection for most of the work shift.
