Summary

The Endodontist serves as a practicing dental specialist within Dental Service, Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS), providing a full range of professional endodontic procedures within the scope of the specialty. The incumbent delivers comprehensive dental care to Veterans in accordance with VHA, Medical Center, and Dental Service policies and standards.

The Dentist- Endodontist duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform oral and radiographic examinations related to endodontic diagnosis.
  • Diagnose diseases and conditions of the dental pulp and periapical tissues.
  • Develop and implement appropriate endodontic treatment plans.
  • Administer local anesthesia and prescribe medications as indicated.
  • Perform routine and complex non-surgical root canal therapy.
  • Perform endodontic retreatment procedures.
  • Perform surgical endodontic procedures, including apicoectomy and root-end fillings.
  • Manage endodontic emergencies, including pain and infection control.
  • Perform temporary restorations and place posts and cores as indicated.
  • Interpret diagnostic imaging, including CBCT/CT scans, when indicated.
  • Provide consultation to general dentists and other providers regarding endodontic care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record (CPRS).
  • Participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning as appropriate.
  • Perform other procedures consistent with the scope of Endodontics as required by the service.


Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Dentist Basic Requirements

  • A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~
  • Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~
  • Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.


Preferred Experience:

  • Advanced skills to provide a full range of clinical duties to determine the type of degree of illness within the dental scope.
  • Advance skills and knowledge of Dental practices.
  • Working knowledge and in compliance with Safety and Environment of Care (EOC) standards and programs such as MSDS Requirements, The Joint Commission EOC Standards, GEMS Programs, Infection Control Guidelines for Dentistry including management of RME, etc.
  • Diagnostic procedures: Comprehensive exams utilizing radiographs, pulp testing, oral cancer screening, adjunctive medical laboratory studies. Preventative dentistry: Dental prophylaxis, topical fluoride treatments, dental sealants, enameloplasty, odontoplasty, athletic mouth guard/fluoride carrier, maintenance of dental implants.
  • Restorative dentistry: Restorations utilizing various filling materials, post and core. Prosthodontics: Dentures, Partials, Crowns, bridges, onlays, inlays, porcelain restorations, CAD/CAM restorations, Valplast partials, treatment partials, obturators, Sleep Apnea appliances, TMJ splints, positioners, nightguards, equilibration. Periodontics: Scale, root planning, curettage, soft tissue/ free gingival grafts, flap surgery, osseous surgery to include: osseous grafts, hemi-sections, frenectomy, distal wedge resection, and crown lengthening.
  • Endodontic Therapy: Routine endodontic procedure/ retreatments, pulpectomies, conventional and rotary preparation and obturation, post and core restorations, apicoectomy, treatment for trauma and perforations with MDA. Oral Surgery: Extractions, surgical extractions, impacted tooth removal, alveoloplasty, removal of Tori, pre-prosthetic surgery, biopsy, treatment of ORNJ/BRONJ. Non-Surgical treatment for TMJ disorders. Miscellaneous: Implant placement and restoration. Implant removal, and IV sedation.

Physical Requirements:

This position may require potentially long periods of continued Moderate lifting of 15-44 pounds, Light lifting under 15 pounds, Ability to distinguish basic colors, Hearing (aid may be permitted).
