Position Overview

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CASH) serves as a dynamic and interdisciplinary academic unit committed to advancing excellence in teaching, research, creative expression, professional practice, and student success. With a diverse portfolio of undergraduate and graduate programs across the arts, social sciences, and humanities, the College provides students with opportunities to explore their academic interests, develop critical and creative thinking skills, and prepare for meaningful careers and graduate or professional study.

The College fosters a collaborative and inclusive learning environment in which faculty, staff, and students engage in interdisciplinary scholarship, innovative instruction, research, creative activities, experiential learning, internships, and community engagement. Through close faculty-student interaction and opportunities for research and professional development, the College supports students in connecting classroom learning to real-world experiences and developing the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary for success beyond graduation.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Dean of the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities provides strategic academic and administrative leadership for a newly reorganized college encompassing programs in Art & Design, Criminal Justice, History, Mass Communication, Music, Language & Literature, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, Social Work, and Theater & Dance. Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean serves as the chief academic officer of the College and is responsible for establishing and advancing its strategic vision, goals, and priorities.

The Dean provides executive leadership to foster an inclusive, collaborative, innovative, and high-performing multidisciplinary academic culture that advances excellence in teaching, research, professional practice, and service. The position provides overarching administrative oversight of the College's academic programs, faculty and staff, professional development, fiscal and budgetary operations, research activities, enrollment, and student success. The Dean also leads the College's external engagement and advancement efforts, including community outreach, strategic partnerships, development, and fundraising, while strengthening the College's visibility, resources, and impact within the University and broader community.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Experience with faculty, staff, and student development, workshops, or awareness training regarding the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities.
• Demonstrated effective collaboration with academic units and faculty, including familiarity with internationalizing the curriculum and facilitating international exchanges.
• Personal and professional commitment to diversity as demonstrated by involvement in teaching, research, creative activity, service to the profession, work with education associations, and/or diversity/inclusion activities.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with diverse individuals, groups and cultures. Excellent writing and oral presentation skills.

Minimum Education/Experience

• A Ph.D. or equivalent with a current or previous tenured faculty appointment at the rank of full professor (or qualifications at NCCU for the rank of full professor) at a University with a research folio.
• At least 6 years of experience as a Dean, Associate Dean, Department Chair, or Director.
• At least 7 productive years of professorial experience as a faculty member.
• At least five years of experience developing academic programs, managing faculty, and/or demonstrated knowledge of budgeting.
• An energetic, strategic, and collaborative leader who will advance the university's academic mission of teaching, research, and service, and is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Ability to serve as an effective and leading voice for campus-wide committees and initiatives as well as for the Chancellor's and Provost's Councils.
