Full Job Description
Data Architect

Location: Remote (U.S. / Preferred Time Zones Eastern/Central)

Employment Type: Full-Time

Level: Senior / Staff / Principal (commensurate with experience)

Reports To: Chief Technology Officer (expected to transition under the Chief Architect)

Position Overview

We are seeking a Data Architect to serve as a driving force behind our platform modernization. In this role, you will diagnose and resolve core data challenges across both legacy and modern technology stacks. Rather than day-to-day database administration, this position focuses on target-state architecture design, schema strategy, event-driven patterns, data governance, and scalable data lifecycle policies.

This is a high-autonomy role where your technical expertise and evidence-based decision-making will directly influence enterprise software used by millions.

Key Responsibilities (What You'll Own)
  • Root Cause Analysis & Strategy: Diagnose fundamental root causes of complex data issues and execute a clear, defensible long-term plan.
  • Target-State Architecture: Design the future-state data architecture across legacy and modern platforms, including realistic migration, sequencing, and rollout strategies.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Partner closely with Engineering, Product, and Enterprise Architecture leadership to align data architecture with broader product and platform goals.
  • Governance & Standards: Establish data architecture standards, review practices, and comprehensive documentation to ensure institutional knowledge is preserved and standardized.
  • Enterprise Impact: Serve as a subject matter expert across broader enterprise architecture questions where data intersects with product strategy.

What Success Looks Like (First 6-12 Months)
  • A Refined Data Roadmap: A credible, actionable plan for resolving core data issues with explicit tradeoff analysis.
  • Data Quality & Consistency: A measurable reduction in data inconsistencies emerging from new feature developments.
  • Technical Trust & Influence: Strong alignment with engineering and product leadership, backed by clear evidence, thoughtful technical debate, and collaborative problem-solving.

Qualifications & Experience

Required:
  • Architecture-First Experience: Proven experience as a Data Architect (typically 8+ years; higher for Staff/Principal levels) with deep expertise in target-state architectural design rather than operational database administration (DBA).
  • Data Modeling & Design: Deep fluency in relational and NoSQL data modeling, schema design, and data governance.
  • Streaming & Messaging Patterns: Strong background in event-driven and streaming architectures (e.g., event buses, message queues).
  • Legacy & Modern Integration: Proven track record of untangling messy, legacy, or under-schematized environments and migrating them toward modern frameworks.
  • Cloud Architecture: Deep experience designing cloud-native data architectures (AWS strongly preferred).
  • Data Lifecycle Management: Experience defining data retention, lifecycle, backup, and disaster recovery (DR) strategies.
  • Pragmatic Communication: Ability to articulate technical decisions clearly, defend proposals with evidence, adapt to new data, and operate effectively in ambiguous environments. Ability to communicate potentially complex proposals in a simple and succinct manner.

Preferred (Nice to Have):
  • Domain experience in Healthcare, EMR/EHR, Health-Tech, or HIPAA-regulated environments.
  • Prior experience building or standing up a dedicated data/platform architecture function from scratch.
