About Detroit Public Schools

Detroit Public Schools (DPS) is a school district that covers all of the city of Detroit, Michigan. The district was founded in 1842 and is the largest school district in Michigan, with approximately 50,000 students enrolled in 110 schools. The district is governed by a seven-member board of education and is responsible for providing education to students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. DPS has faced significant financial and academic challenges in recent years, including declining enrollment, low test scores, and a large budget deficit. In 2016, the district was restructured and replaced by the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), which is a new entity with a new board of education and a new superintendent.
