WHO WE ARE LOOKING FORThe Department of General Services, Fleet Management Services is seeking an Equipment Maintenance Crew Chief to provide first line supervisory and highly skilled work directly supervising a team of journey-level Mechanic Technicians as well as performing Mechanic Technician work, i.e., inspection, preventive maintenance, repair, or quality assurance tasks performed on a wide variety of light, medium, and heavy duty vehicles, diesel, alternative fuel, electric and/or gasoline powered buses and related equipment.
What You'll Be DoingThis recruitment will establish an eligible list to fill current and future vacancies.The individual selected to fill this position will be responsible for serving as a first-line supervisor of various levels of mechanics and lesser skilled employees who perform repairs and preventive maintenance on a wide variety of heavy-duty vehicles, mobile equipment or commercial transit equipment.
The duties will include:
- Scheduling and assigning work repairing vehicles;
- Inspecting work in progress or upon completion to see that repair and maintenance Work are properly performed;
- Furnishing technical advice on difficult/complex jobs;
- Monitoring and enforcing preventive maintenance schedules;
- Evaluating employee performance; managing employee attendance;
- Working with County departments/agencies to resolve, repair/maintenance problems;
- Entering data and reviewing data posted to the computerized information system;
- and coaching and mentoring employees.
The Division of Fleet Management Services has three main worksite locations (Rockville, Silver Spring and Kensington), and the employee will work on specific shifts to be assigned, based on a24/7-hour operation. The shifts may include nights and weekends and are subject to change based on training/operational requirements.
The individual selected for this position will be considered an Essential Employee. Essential employees must report to work during a period of general emergency or liberal leave.
As a manager/supervisor of unionized employees, this position has a responsibility for fostering a positive labor relations environment based on mutual trust, respect, and cooperation.
Minimum QualificationsExperience:Six (6) years of journey level experience in the vehicle repair trade in heavy duty vehicles and mobile equipment, commercial transit equipment, and/or fire/rescue apparatus and equipment; or any combination thereof totaling six (6) years.
Education: Graduation from high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
Physical Ability: Ability to lift and otherwise move objects that weigh up to one hundred (100) pounds.
LICENSE:At Time of Employment Application:- Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.
First Day of County Employment:- Possession of either a Class "A" or "B" (or equivalent) Commercial Driver's License with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsement, or an Instructional Permit for a Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsement, issued by the applicant's state of residence.
Upon Completion of Probationary Period:- Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "A" or "B" (or equivalent) Commercial Driver's License, with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsement from employee's state of residence; Federal Environmental Protection Agency Air Conditioning Certification (Clean Air Act, 1990, Section 608 and 609) appropriate to the equipment serviced/inspected.
- ASE Master Certification in Medium/Heavy Truck, Transit Bus, or Medium/Heavy Vehicle within eighteen months of appointment to a position in this class.
- A Maryland State Forklift Operator License.
Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences - A bachelor's degree in an automotive related area or graduation from an automotive trade school;
- An active and current ASE Master Certification in Medium and Heavy-Duty Trucks;
- Experience supervising staff to include evaluating employee performance and attendance management in a union environment;
- Experience applying the principles, practices, and concepts of automotive/ heavy equipment fleet operations and management;
- Experience scheduling, assigning and reviewing work in progress and, upon completion, to see that repair and maintenance work are properly performed; and
- Experience using automated systems technology and software applications.
