The Opportunity

The Coverage Lead is an important role in MRSNA's Claims Department. The Coverage Lead is responsible for providing insurance coverage advice and serves as a strategic partner to MRS-NA claim professionals. The position will provide coverage support in relation to commercial general liability and commercial first party property coverage. The role will also be responsible for managing certain insurance coverage and bad faith litigation against the company. The candidate should have strong analytical skills, the ability to foresee and weigh all of the potential implications of a decision and be able to manage multiple tasks and priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice to claim professionals on a variety of insurance coverage issues under commercial casualty and property lines of coverage
  • Participate in strategic discussions on coverage issues with the Claims Team and internal stakeholders, including Claims Leadership Team, Corporate Underwriting and Underwriting
  • Manage insurance coverage and bad faith litigation brought against the company
  • Oversee outside counsel handling litigation against the company
  • Review and comment on pleadings and discovery prepared by outside counsel
  • Monitor insurance coverage case law nationally, and notify internal stakeholders of developments
  • Provide training to claim professionals on coverage matters
  • Communicate significant claims issues to the Chief Claims Officer


Qualifications

Successful candidates will possess the following experience/skills/qualifications:
  • JD required
  • Very strong understanding of insurance coverage and bad faith issues and law
  • 8 years + experience advising insurers on coverage matters and preparing coverage opinions and position letters
  • 8 years + of experience litigating insurance coverage disputes and bad faith claims
  • Experience in all aspects of litigation, including preparing pleadings, motion practice, all facets of discovery and trial preparation
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in addressing coverage matters under first party property coverage and commercial general liability coverage
  • Ability to manage multiple matters
  • Diplomatic, confident and collaborative
  • Willingness to travel for meetings with claims teams, and attend mediations and trials (approximately 10%)

The Company is open to considering candidates in numerous locations, including Princeton (NJ), Philadelphia (PA), Chicago (IL), New York (NY), Atlanta (GA), or San Francisco (CA). The salary range posted below reflects market variations across various locations. The offer will be adjusted per geography.

The base salary range anticipated for this position is $177,700 - $230,000, plus opportunity for company bonus based upon a percentage of eligible pay. In addition, the company makes available a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, an employee wellness program, life and disability insurance, 401k match, retirement savings plan, paid holidays and paid time off (PTO).

The salary estimate is adjusted to reflect the varying market conditions across different locations, with the higher end being more aligned with the New York and San Francisco job markets. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role. Most candidates will start in the bottom half of the range.
