Correctional Unit Medical Director, you will oversee the delivery of comprehensive healthcare services within a Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) facility, ensuring timely, high-quality, and accessible care for an underserved patient population. Working with significant autonomy, you will provide medical oversight, exercise independent clinical judgment, and ensure compliance with TTUHSC Correctional Health Services policies, TDCJ regulations, and National Commission on Correctional Health Care standards.
In addition to providing patient care, you will lead and mentor a team of physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, fostering a culture of clinical excellence and collaboration. Reporting to the Regional Medical Director, this role offers a unique opportunity to combine hands-on medicine with leadership while partnering with TTUHSC faculty, healthcare professionals, and correctional leadership to improve health outcomes and advance correctional healthcare.
Major/Essential FunctionsProvides Clinical Leadership & Medical Oversight:- Serves as the Unit Health Authority, ensuring the delivery of quality healthcare services and compliance with organizational, regulatory, and accreditation standards.
- Collaborates with the Regional Medical Director and correctional leadership to address clinical, operational, and patient care needs.
Delivers Comprehensive Patient Care:- Evaluates, diagnoses, and treats acute and chronic medical conditions through patient assessments, examinations, and clinical decision-making.
- Orders and interprets diagnostic tests, develops treatment plans, and coordinates specialty referrals as needed.
Leads & Supports Healthcare Providers:- Supervises physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, providing clinical oversight and mentorship.
- Delegates prescriptive authority and promotes a culture of teamwork, accountability, and clinical excellence.
Ensures Quality, Compliance & Documentation:- Maintains accurate medical records and ensures timely, thorough clinical documentation.
- Monitors compliance with TTUHSC, TDCJ, and applicable healthcare policies, procedures, and regulations.
Supports Continuity of Care:- Participates in the provider call rotation to ensure patient access to care after hours, on weekends, and holidays.
- Responds to urgent clinical needs and supports continuity of healthcare services across the correctional unit.
Preferred Qualifications- Previous experience in Correctional Health or Public Health settings (preferred, not required)
Pay StatementCompensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as the institutional pay plan. For additional information, please reference the institutional pay plan website at https://app4.ttuhsc.edu/payplan.
Required Qualifications- Current license to practice medicine by the Texas Medical Board.
- Current Drug Enforcement Agency controlled substances registration certificate.

Visa InformationTTUHSC, at its sole discretion, may initiate new H-1B I-129 visa petitions in accordance with the directive issued by Governor Abbott.
