GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 

The Corporate Controller leads the day-to-day financial operations of the organization, with primary ownership of financial reporting and analysis, project and cost accounting, financial records, inventory accounting, accounts payable, payroll, and other finance-related functions. This role provides the leadership and direction needed to achieve optimal levels of profitability, productivity, and quality, and to assure internal and external customer satisfaction.

This role establishes the financial controls, reporting standards, and processes that keep the Company's financial information accurate, compliant, and actionable; from budgeting and forecasting through month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close and the annual external audit. This key leader must have an in-depth understanding of the Company's financial position and be able to provide clear, real-time answers to issues and questions as they arise. The Controller partners with company leadership, Project Management, Project Controls, Operations, and external stakeholders including sureties, auditors, and tax advisors.

The Controller leads and develops the accounting team, driving consistency, integrity, and continuous improvement in financial practices across the organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Leadership & Development

  • Plan, develop, organize, implement, direct, and evaluate the organization's fiscal function and performance by identifying and tracking key performance indicators in support of the Company's goals
  • Actively assess and build competencies and strength in the accounting organization
  • Evaluate the finance structure and team plan for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group, while providing individuals with professional and personal growth opportunities
  • Be a collaborative, disciplined, and detail-oriented finance leader who sets the standard and drives the correct culture

Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations

  • Manage professional-level accounting functions and the preparation of reports including profitability, working capital, and balance sheet accounting
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements
  • Provide timely cost extraction data and act as the integrator of data reporting standards across the group
  • Benchmark, establish, and interpret operational and financial Key Performance Metrics (KPIs)

Project Accounting & Revenue Recognition

  • Develop and maintain a system of financial controls and reporting for the entire project accounting process, including monitoring and reporting of the project budget and job costing
  • Oversee work-in-progress (WIP) reporting and revenue recognition under the percentage-of-completion method, ensuring compliance with ASC 606
  • Review estimated costs to complete, over- and under-billings, change orders, and retainage on a project-by-project basis
  • Partner with Project Controls to align schedule, change management, and physical progress data with financial forecasts and WIP reporting

Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis

  • Partner on preparation of budgets and financial forecasts; participate in continual improvement of the budgeting process through education of department managers on financial issues impacting their budgets
  • Assess the potential profitability of long-term capital investments through detailed financial analysis and in-depth understanding of the benefits of the investment
  • Identify trends and advise company leadership with recommended actions based on sound analysis
  • Drive process improvements and margin enhancements with timely data analysis

Compliance, Audit & Financial Relationships

  • Assure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws as they relate to the Accounting/Finance function within the organization
  • Assure the financial integrity of all accounting functions and ensure controls are in place to comply with all FASB (Financial Accounting Standards Board) requirements and US GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles)
  • Coordinate the annual external audit and interim reviews, and partner with tax advisors on federal, state, and local tax compliance and planning
  • Support banking, surety, and bonding relationships, including timely preparation of financial packages required by lenders and sureties
  • Adhere to internal standards, policies, and procedures
  • Perform special projects and complete other duties as assigned or requested

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

 

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience within the Accounting/Financial Reporting function, with at least 3 of those years within a construction accounting setting
  • Experience supervising an accounting team in support of a large, national organization
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing project accounting and job-cost reporting across multiple concurrent projects and business units, including WIP review and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition
  • Experience working within an ERP system

Preferred

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Advanced degree (e.g., Master's degree) in Accounting or Finance
  • Experience working within JD Edwards or a comparable construction/project-based ERP

SKILLS

 

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and SOX compliance requirements
  • Working knowledge of construction/percentage-of-completion accounting, WIP reporting, job costing, and revenue recognition under ASC 606
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the broader Microsoft Office suite
  • Proven leadership, team development, and analytical problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced project environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively to all levels of the organization
  • Self-starter who can work independently while supporting the needs of the team
  • Effective time management skills
