Position Title: Controller
Location: Herndon, VA - Primarily remote; candidates must be local to the DC-Metro area for occasional on-site meetings.
Assignment Type: Permanent Hire
Compensation: $200,000-$250,000 annually, plus bonus potential of up to 10%
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM

Responsibilities - Serve as the principal accounting officer and provide leadership for all accounting operations.
- Ensure financial reporting and accounting practices comply with U.S. GAAP and applicable nonprofit accounting standards.
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes and drive continued improvements in close timelines and accuracy.
- Oversee preparation of internal and external financial statements, reports, and required disclosures.
- Manage general ledger activity, journal entries, account reconciliations, and accounting policies and procedures.
- Provide financial reporting, analysis, and accounting guidance to executive leadership and other key stakeholders.
- Oversee accounting for multiple revenue streams, including grants, contributions, contracts, subscriptions, and service-related revenue.
- Ensure appropriate accounting treatment for restricted and unrestricted funding.
- Provide oversight of accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, payroll, expense reimbursements, cash application, and related transaction-processing functions.
- Develop, maintain, and continuously improve the organization's internal control environment.
- Lead annual financial statement audits and other required external audits.
- Coordinate nonprofit tax filings and other federal, state, local, and multi-jurisdictional compliance requirements.
- Ensure compliance with grant requirements, donor restrictions, and applicable financial regulations.
- Oversee cash, investments, liquidity, debt activity, and banking reconciliations
Required Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
- Active Certified Public Accountant license.
- At least 10 years of progressive accounting, financial reporting, or financial management experience in a non-profit setting.
- Significant accounting leadership experience within the nonprofit sector strongly preferred.
- At least five years of experience leading accounting operations within a complex organization with annual revenue of $50 million or more.
- Experience overseeing a team of 5-10+.
