Position OverviewWe are seeking a Control Design & Development Engineer to backfill a key role on the Advanced Controls and Condition Monitoring team, part of our Advanced Power Technology organization with global responsibility for advancing technologies that support future product needs - including site optimization, high-efficiency powertrains, and alternative power sources. You will research and develop new control systems and software, and contribute to the development, evaluation, and deployment of control algorithms, diagnostics, and optimization algorithms, tools, and technologies, fully on-site in Mossville, IL.
You will direct and contribute to the concept, development, and design of complex components, subsystems, or processes while strengthening your analytical skills and engineering expertise. This role offers exposure across software, hardware, and testing domains, opportunities to mentor and coach team members, and the chance to broaden your professional network while working on technologies such as advanced controls, AI, and digital twins.
Key Contributions & Responsibilities- Develop control algorithms and software; conduct simulation using SIL (Software-in-the-Loop) and HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) methods.
- Test and validate control algorithms for new products, including validation directly on machine.
- Evaluate new products, processes, or systems; contribute to software development and analysis.
- Communicate results to customers, suppliers, team members, and other business units.
- Participate in team standup meetings, model development, design reviews, and model release activities.
Team Structure & Work Environment- You will be part of the Advanced Controls and Condition Monitoring team, collaborating closely with production teams to deliver innovative solutions.
- Work environment is approximately 90% office-based, with PPE required for the remaining time spent supporting machine validation.
RequirementsEducation & Experience- Master's degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a comparable field required, with 3+ years of industry experience. PhD in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Mechanical Engineering preferred.
Top 3 Skills- Extensive experience with MATLAB/Simulink, Stateflow, Simscape Power Systems, and co-simulation applications.
- Knowledge of control theory spanning linear control and basic PID with physics insight, advanced nonlinear control disciplines (adaptive or variable structure/sliding mode control), and intelligent control schemes such as neural networks or fuzzy logic control.
- Experience with embedded software implementation based on multi-tasking real-time operating systems and/or Linux-based operating systems.
Required Technical Skills- Ability to debug software using tools such as Lauterbach, CANape, CANalyzer, or similar toolsets.
- Experience with version control tools such as Git or IVY.
- Programming experience in Java, JavaScript, Python, C, or C++.
Desired Technical Skills- In-depth knowledge of generator controls and operation, as well as engine controls.
- Experience with controls for hybrid energy plants utilizing renewable sources.
- Experience with software development tools and service tools.
Required Soft Skills- Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- Strong problem-solving ability with proven success collaborating across internal teams.
- Ability to work independently, manage one's own time, and take initiative on self-starting tasks.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues and implement system changes as needed to resolve them.
