Full Job Description
Nationwide's NF Integrated Digital Solutions (IDS) Imaging & Workflow organization is seeking a Consultant, Software Engineer to serve as the AWD-NF technical lead for the ChorusAWDVenture line. This is an opportunity to join a highly visible, business-critical technology space at an exciting point in its evolution.

AWD-NF is a foundational workflow and document-processing platform used to support important Nationwide operations. The platform is moving forward as a modern, cloud-hosted solution running in Nationwide's AWS environment, and the team is actively improving its reliability, performance, security, integrations, automation, and user experience. The person in this role will help shape what comes next while continuing to strengthen the platform that our business partners rely on every day.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You will be close to the architecture, code, delivery, production support, and people who make the work successful. You will have the opportunity to influence technical direction, bring clarity to complex problems, and help teams deliver solutions with confidence.

What you will do
  • Serve as the technical lead and trusted engineering partner for AWD-NF within the ChorusAWDVenture line.
  • Lead technical design, development, testing, troubleshooting, and implementation of scalable platform capabilities and integrations.
  • Establish technical direction across application, API, database, messaging, automation, infrastructure, and deployment concerns.
  • Help the team make sound decisions about architecture, technical trade-offs, sequencing, dependencies, and risk.
  • Provide hands-on support for production stability, incident response, root-cause analysis, performance improvement, and operational readiness.
  • Partner with Software Engineering Product Managers, Agile Leaders, architects, quality engineers, business stakeholders, vendors, and other technical leads to keep delivery moving.
  • Clarify ownership, surface dependencies early, and turn complex technical challenges into actionable plans for the team.
  • Contribute to development design, story refinement, estimates, code reviews, technical documentation, runbooks, and release readiness.
  • Promote an automation-first, quality-focused engineering culture across the software development lifecycle.
  • Use AI-enabled tools thoughtfully to accelerate analysis, solution design, documentation, testing, and delivery while maintaining engineering judgment and quality standards.

Technical skillset

The successful candidate will bring strong software engineering fundamentals and the ability to work across a modern enterprise technology ecosystem. Experience with the following is especially valuable:
  • Java, Spring Boot, object-oriented design, and backend application development.
  • RESTful services, API design, OpenAPI, Apigee, service integration, and API troubleshooting.
  • SQL and Oracle databases, including query analysis, performance considerations, stored procedures, and data dependencies; experience with Snowflake and Power BI for data integration, reporting, and analytics.
  • Kafka and event-driven integration patterns.
  • Angular, JavaScript, or TypeScript sufficient to understand and support modernized user experiences and end-to-end flows.
  • Automated testing and quality engineering practices, including JUnit, Mockito, Postman, Playwright, or similar tools.
  • CI/CD and DevSecOps practices using tools such as GitHub Actions, Harness, Docker, Kubernetes, Rancher, or comparable platforms.
  • Linux environments, command-line tools, deployment automation, and environment troubleshooting.
  • Observability and operational support using tools such as Splunk, New Relic, and related monitoring capabilities.
  • Experience with Ansible and AWS CDK for infrastructure as code, environment provisioning, and deployment automation.
  • Secure engineering practices, authentication and authorization patterns, credential protection, and enterprise integration controls.

Beyond individual technologies, we are looking for someone who understands how to build maintainable, supportable solutions in a complex, regulated enterprise environment. You should be comfortable moving between architecture and implementation, between strategic direction and tactical problem-solving, and between project delivery and production operations.

Leadership and coaching

This role provides technical leadership without requiring formal people management. Your influence will come from your technical credibility, ownership mindset, communication, and ability to help others succeed.

You will be expected to:
  • Demonstrated ability to support end-to-end delivery from early design through implementation, production readiness, and long-term support.
  • Create clarity when requirements, dependencies, or ownership are not yet clear.
  • Lead through influence and build alignment across development, quality, architecture, product, business, infrastructure, and vendor teams.
  • Mentor and coach engineers, testers, and vendor partners through pairing, design reviews, code reviews, knowledge-sharing sessions, and constructive feedback.
  • Help team members strengthen their skills in architecture, API and service testability, automation, CI/CD, production support, and engineering practices.
  • Set practical standards and reusable patterns without becoming a bottleneck or single point of failure.
  • Adapt your communication to the audience, from detailed technical conversations with engineers to concise risk and decision discussions with business and executive partners.
  • Remain calm, curious, and solutions-oriented during incidents, delivery pressure, ambiguity, and change.
  • Build distributed ownership by making knowledge accessible through documentation, runbooks, examples, and active knowledge transfer.
  • Recognize opportunities to improve how the team works and help turn those opportunities into measurable improvements.

In-flight efforts

The ChorusAWDVenture line has meaningful work already underway, including:
  • Continuing the evolution of AWD-NF on the supported SS&C Chorus platform hosted in AWS.
  • Supporting Licensing Modernization and LCS integration efforts with reliable, scalable workflow capabilities.
  • Advancing Intelligent Workflow initiatives and enabling broader workflow, case-management, document, and work-item processing capabilities.
  • Improving search, reporting, task-center, email-queue, and high-volume work-type experiences.
  • Expanding API and integration capabilities across services and partner platforms, including Kafka and Apigee-enabled patterns.
  • Strengthening regression automation, Playwright coverage, release validation, and automated quality gates.
  • Addressing technical debt across application code, database performance, platform configuration, infrastructure, deployment processes, monitoring, and documentation.
  • Improving production stability, observability, performance baselining, incident prevention, and operational readiness.
  • Continuing platform, security, browser, infrastructure, and vendor-supported version improvements.
  • Continue advancing AI-DLC adoption across planning, design, development, testing, deployment, and operations by applying approved AI tools and responsible practices to improve delivery capacity, quality, security, and cycle time. These efforts are not isolated technical exercises. They directly support delivery confidence, associate productivity, customer and business-partner experiences, operational efficiency, and the ability to deliver future change safely.

Future opportunities

The future roadmap creates significant room for technical leadership and innovation. In this role, you will help the organization:
  • Shape the next phases of AWD-NF modernization and future Chorus upgrades.
  • Establish reusable platform patterns that can support additional Intelligent Workflow initiatives and multiple Nationwide business lines.
  • Continue the phased modernization and migration of legacy workflow capabilities into a more consistent, scalable platform experience.
  • Increase automation, reduce manual regression effort, and improve release speed and confidence.
  • Advance performance engineering, observability, resiliency, and proactive operational support.
  • Simplify deployment and environment management through scripting, automation, and repeatable infrastructure practices.
  • Improve API governance, integration quality, auditability, reporting, and security across the platform.
  • Use AI and emerging engineering practices to accelerate delivery, improve analysis, and reduce technical debt responsibly.
  • Grow technical capability across the team by creating standards, coaching others, and building a stronger internal knowledge base.

What success looks like

In this role, success means the AWD-NF platform is more stable, more observable, easier to change, and better positioned for the future. It means engineers and partners have clearer technical direction, stronger reusable patterns, and greater confidence in what they are delivering. It means the team is growing its capability while delivering important modernization work with energy, discipline, and purpose.

This role will work a hybrid schedule coming into the Columbus, Ohio office 2 days per week on Mondays & Tuesdays.
