Construction Estimator

The Construction Estimator is responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates and proposals for public and private heavy civil construction projects. This position analyzes plans, specifications, and contract documents to determine labor, equipment, material, subcontractor, and indirect costs associated with project execution. The Estimator collaborates closely with operations, project management, vendors, and subcontractors to develop accurate and competitive bids that align with company objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review project plans, specifications, bid documents, and contract requirements.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs for grading, drainage, paving, utilities, structures, and other heavy civil work.
  • Use markets tools to find bid and quote opportunities
  • Solicit and evaluate quotations from subcontractors, suppliers, and equipment vendors.
  • Develop detailed cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, overhead, and profit.
  • Analyze project risks, opportunities, and constructability challenges.
  • Prepare bid summaries, pricing sheets, and proposal packages.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and project walkthroughs as required.
  • Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, and operations personnel to develop bidding strategies.
  • Review historical cost data and production rates to support estimating accuracy.
  • Maintain estimating databases, cost histories, and bid records.
  • Evaluate scope gaps, exclusions, and qualifications to ensure accurate proposals.
  • Assist with contract reviews and project handoff meetings following project award.
  • Monitor market conditions, material pricing trends, and subcontractor availability.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, safety standards, and procurement procedures.
  • Willingness to assist the construction management team with construction accounting
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screenings.


Qualifications

Education
  • Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant heavy civil construction experience may be considered.

Experience
  • 1-3 years of estimating experience in heavy highway, road construction, asphalt paving, site development, or civil construction.
  • Experience estimating public agency projects, including DOT, municipal, county, and state-funded work preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong understanding of heavy highway construction methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Proficiency with estimating software.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Knowledge of DOT specifications, bid procedures, and contract requirements.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Self-starter and proficient at working independently
