Full Job Description
Job Purpose

  • The CASE Vehicle Network Controls Software Senior Engineer role contributes directly to Honda's Connected, Autonomous, Shared, Electric (CASE) goals. A senior engineer is capable of leading the implementation of new development items related to Vehicle Network (VN) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) systems without oversight, utilizing their experience to overcome highly complex implementation challenges related to new requirements.
  • VN ECU assignments may include a variety of ECUs controlling both vehicle functions and CAN & Ethernet network management functions covering development, integration and test of embedded software for VN ECUs. VN ECU development also includes development of functionality related to Over-The-Air (OTA) software updates and cybersecurity protection mechanisms.
  • Depending on electrical architecture, the VN ECU may be referred to as the IMG ECU, CGW ECU, and CORE ECU. This job role is responsible for all VN ECU's.

Key Accountabilities

  • Project management: Create and execute a complex ECU development plan for overall automobile development, including adaptation of new requirements or new systems without Honda precedent, utilizing existing processes compliant with industry standards. Able to execute the development activities required at each project milestone, following a defined schedule, and performing on vehicle verifications to confirm software and hardware functions, and reporting the results to technical management with minimal guidance or oversight. May provide mentoring to other engineers to support their project implementations.
  • Engineering specification design for VN ECU integration applications, including electrical circuit hardware and software in tools such as MATLAB, Simulink or MS VISIO. Deciding the best implementation for converting design concepts into requirements and functional specifications, then conducting design reviews with technical leadership. May lead other engineers on project-specific complex implementations and best practices.
  • Engineering troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and solution design: Independently working hands-on in prototype or mass production level vehicles to identify VN ECU functional issues, or communication network issues and decide the steps required for resolution. Communicate cascading impacts of issues cross-functionally by summarizing and sharing common issues across other projects and peers.
  • Testing and verification of VN ECU specifications related to hardware and software: Perform testing in prototype or mass production level vehicles related to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) or verification of technical change points to ensure proper electrical functional performance, quality and reliability. Can derive the required verification activities and test techniques for newly implemented cybersecurity specifications without prior development use cases by utilizing their knowledge and experience. Accountable to create test result reports and conduct verification reviews with technical leadership.
  • Improvement and innovation: May lead large groups of engineers on specific investigations of new processes or technologies which improve communication network system performance, development capability or efficiency. Includes making concise project proposals to management, setting direction for the best implementation and accountability to report progress on technical activity, budget and schedule. Provides reports showing methods to more efficiently test or automate routine testing.
  • Cyber security requirement analysis and implementation verification: Work with cyber security specialists to understand the security requirements needed for VN ECU applications, create and verify related specifications and lead VN ECU suppliers on implementations.
