Role Summary:
The Compressor Motor Engineer plays a critical technical role in delivering engineered-to-order (ETO) and designed-to order (DTO) compressor motor solutions for Trane Commercial. This role supports the Compressor ETO Design & Implementation Team Leader and serves as the motor subject-matter expert for custom compressor configurations across La Crosse and Monterrey manufacturing sites. This Engineer will lead motor-related design guidance, analysis, qualification interpretation and documentation activities for compressor ETO projects while collaborating closely with Applied Compression (ACC) design teams, product engineering, sourcing, quality, aftermarket, product management and manufacturing. This work directly supports customer-specific needs and advanced product applications that demand technical precision, rapid turnaround and uncompromising quality.

Core Job Responsibilities (others may be added):
Motor Design Guidance, Application & Technical Ownership:
  • Provide motor and magnetic bearing engineering leadership for all compressor ETO and DTO projects.
  • Evaluate motor characteristics, performance curves, winding configurations, operating envelopes, and protection strategies to ensure application suitability.
  • Interpret qualification test results from Applied Compression and incorporate findings into motor application decisions.
  • Support or oversee motor and magnetic bearing component design updates, supplier communications, and technical reviews when needed.

Project Execution & Cross-Functional Collaboration:
  • Work closely with the Compressor ETO Design & Implementation Team Lead to define requirements, scope, and deliverables for motor-related ETO work.
  • Partner with ACC compressor design teams to align technical expectations and resolve open engineering questions.
  • Collaborate with product engineering, manufacturing, sourcing, and quality engineering to ensure motor readiness for production.
  • Provide technical guidance during early factory builds, troubleshooting, and customer-specific configurations.

Issue Resolution & Lifecycle Support:
  • Investigate and resolve motor-related issues that arise during qualification, assembly, testing, or initial production.
  • Conduct or support root-cause analysis and corrective action development.
  • Provide expert guidance on motor behavior, thermal limits, starting characteristics, and system integration impacts.

Technical Leadership & Standards:
  • Serve as the subject-matter expert for compressor motor and magnetic bearing application, analysis, and design considerations.
  • Contribute to motor application guidelines, design standards, and lessons-learned documentation.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline) and at least 2-years of work experience in electric motor design/application, HVAC systems, compressor technology or similar experience is required.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with compressor motors or magnetic bearings.
  • Understanding of electric motor fundamentals (induction, BLDC/PMSM), thermal behavior and performance characteristics.
  • Ability to analyze motor performance data, qualification reports, and system interactions.
  • Solid problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across functions.
  • Experience with motor modeling tools (e.g., Motor-CAD, finite-element analysis a plus).
  • Working knowledge of factory processes and design-for-manufacture/assembly principles.
