Overview
The Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering at Yale University is seeking a talented Communications Professional to advance and fully integrate communications across the Center's initiatives and programs, with the goal of increasing visibility and expanding the global impact of green chemistry and green engineering. Working closely with Center leadership and staff, this role will focus on identifying key achievements, opportunities, and areas for growth in support of the Center's mission. The ideal candidate will play an important role in shaping how the Center's work is understood and appreciated by a wide range of audiences — from researchers and industry partners to policymakers and the general public. The selected candidate will manage and enhance the Center's websites, social media accounts, and outreach initiatives, driving meaningful engagement with both internal and external stakeholders. The Communications Professional serves as the communications lead for the Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering, functioning as the central point of contact for Center leadership and staff across all communications activities and programs. This role is responsible for developing and executing integrated communication strategies that effectively convey the Center's mission, research, and impact to diverse audiences at the local, national, and global level. The position bridges science and storytelling, ensuring that the Center's work is accurately, compellingly, and consistently represented across all platforms and channels.
A key function of the role will be to work with the Yale School of the Environment’s Office of Communications and Yale’s Office of Public Affairs and Communications to strategize, develop, and implement communication initiatives that advance the mission of the Center and that align with and advance YSE’s and the University’s broader communications efforts. In establishing a consistent look and tone for all Center communications, the role will collaborate with YSE’s director of design to ensure that all digital and print materials are aligned with School and University branding guidelines.
Skills and Abilities
1.Good written and verbal communication skills, with a developing ability to translate scientific concepts into clear, engaging, and accessible content for diverse audiences — from scientific communities to the general public — and a willingness to adapt messaging and tone accordingly.
2.Experience with communications strategies across multiple platforms and channels, including social media management, email marketing platforms (e.g. Mailchimp or equivalent), and best practices and analytics.
3.Basic proficiency in website management, content management systems (CMS), foundational web development, and graphic design tools (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent), complemented by an interest in photography and visual storytelling.
4.Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, meet deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively with leadership, staff, and external stakeholders, with attention to detail and accuracy throughout.
5.A proactive and positive demeanor, with a strong interest in sustainability, green chemistry, or related scientific fields, and an eagerness to grow within a mission-driven environment, including conference participations upon assignment.
Preferred Education and Experience
3–4 years of experience in mission-driven organizations and international environments. Demonstrated experience in the development and roll-out of integrated science-related communications strategies in multi-stakeholder environments. Strong record of science communication, storytelling, and community management, rounded by experience in website development and social media. Ability to work in a dynamic environment, manage time-sensitive issues, and changing priorities.
Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g. science communication, graphic and web design, communications, chemistry, chemical engineering or similar). Prior experience in the field of Chemistry or Chemical Engineering; different combinations of work experience and education will be considered.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Brand & Communications Strategy. Develops and executes public relations strategy, output, and performance for the department with the goal of increasing media impressions in local, national, industry-specific and alumni media. Creates communications strategy to showcase top technologies available for license. Ensures consistent look and tone for all department communications, including written content, website and social media. 2. Media Relations. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with media representatives. Identifies opportunities to work with other the departments, university publications and the Office of Public Affairs to develop and publicize stories. 3. Content Creation. Assesses the University faculty inventions and student startups for newsworthiness and create compelling news and public relations content. Creates engaging, dynamic content for the public, including press releases, blog articles, website updates, newsletter articles and social media. 4. Outreach. Manages delivery channels for newsworthy content, including updating and maintaining the department websites, social media accounts, and articles for email newsletters, and creating video, print, and on-campus events. Creates websites that embed existing content from Yale and external sites (publications related to the technology, videos featuring inventor, profile on Yale Bulletin and Calendar innovators webpage). 5. Other. Seeks out, negotiates with and recommends external organizations that can provide services that optimize both the cost and functionality of the new communications strategy. Ensures that all communications conform to the University guidelines. Hires student workers as needed to assist in producing copy. May perform other duties as assigned.
