DescriptionThe Department of Architecture at the University of Virginia School of Architecture (arch.virginia.edu) invites applications for a tenured position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor: the Commonwealth Professor of Architecture and Artificial Intelligence. We seek a thought leader poised to define how artificial intelligence and advanced technology is transforming not only the tools of architectural practice, but the terms of the conversation itself. The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership in design, pedagogy, and research; work fluidly across disciplinary boundaries; and advance discourse on AI's use and consequence, both within the discipline and at the school.
The Department of Architecture's mission is to educate and inspire the next generation of architectural leaders who understand our discipline as inseparable from the landscapes, cultures, environments, and histories we inhabit. We actively encourage collaboration across the School of Architecture's disciplines, including with the Departments of Landscape Architecture, Urban and Environmental Planning, and Architectural History, as well as within the larger university. As a vital member of this vibrant community, the successful candidate will advance these aims through teaching, research, and collaboration with faculty and students.
QualificationsThis is a full-time appointment, with the expectation that faculty will reside in Charlottesville and actively engage with faculty, staff, and students at the University. Successful candidates must hold a terminal degree in Architecture (MArch) or a comparable degree in a related design field (such as MLA, MUD, PHD). Tenured faculty at UVA are expected to maintain high-profile design research while leading curricular development and academic committees in collaboration with school leadership. Candidates should show clear evidence of a rigorous, design-driven body of research and creative work and describe its potential impact and integration to ongoing work at UVA. Candidates will be expected to teach core architecture design studios and additional courses.
