Overview
Job Title: Commissioning Engineer

Position Overview:

The Commissioning Area Engineer is responsible for coordinating, work connected with the testing and/or commissioning of electrical distribution and transmission substations for utility clients. Individual will provide direct supervision over Electric Power Systems startup personnel along with other suppliers such as contractor electricians and engineering staff.

Responsibilities
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement through active participation in safety programs.
  • Support continuous improvement through incident reviews, lessons learned, and proactive safety reporting.
  • Coordinate and lead testing and commissioning activities for new and existing electrical transmission and distribution substations (greenfield and brownfield equipment).
  • Verify that all testing and commissioning procedures comply with company standards, client requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Supervise and direct startup personnel, contractor electricians, and engineering teams to ensure safe and efficient project execution.
  • Perform substation field engineering, including development of work plans and oversight of testing activities during commissioning.
  • Develop, review, and revise isolation and restoration procedures to support safe energization and system operations.
  • Prepare and execute integrated functional test plans to validate protection, control, and SCADA systems.
  • Lead functional testing efforts, ensuring compliance with project specifications, design standards, and utility requirements.
  • Direct troubleshooting and issue resolution during commissioning, including development and execution of corrective action plans.
  • Mark up field drawings, generate discrepancy lists, and formulate request for information logs (RFIs) and complete project closeout documentation within required timelines.
  • Provide on-site technical support to design engineering, construction teams, and operations personnel throughout project lifecycle.
  • Interface with customer contacts, operators, and key stakeholders to ensure alignment with operational needs and system requirements or design improvements.
  • Deliver technical guidance on complex or non-standard issues while maintaining adherence to utility design philosophy and standards.
Qualifications
  • BS or 2 year degree in electrical engineering is a plus, along with experience in communicating with microprocessor type relays.
  • Minimum 5 years9 experience in electrical equipment testing and inspection, including high voltage applications
  • Knowledge of testing, commissioning and maintenance of power equipment.
  • Excellent management and supervisory skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Superior Safety record
  • Broad experience with wide variety of electrical apparatus used in power industry, including transformers, breakers and switchgear.
  • Experience in working in utility transmission substation is required.
  • Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen due to this being a safety sensitive position.
