Summary

Join a forward-thinking underwriting team at a pivotal time of growth and transformation. As a Senior Commercial Lines Field Underwriter, you will play a critical role in driving profitable growth, strengthening agency partnerships, and advancing underwriting excellence. This is an opportunity to influence strategy, shape portfolio performance, and contribute to the evolution of Commercial Lines best practices.

Location Requirement:

To be considered for this role, candidates must reside within the specified geographic location. This position requires regular in-person visits with local brokers and agents, so remote hires outside the designated territory cannot be accommodated.

What You'll Do

  • Drive profitable growth across your assigned territory by achieving underwriting and production goals across all Commercial Lines business
  • Evaluate and underwrite new business submissions by analyzing risk, determining next steps, and efficiently moving accounts to quote or decline
  • Set pricing and recommend coverages, identifying competitive advantages and account rounding opportunities
  • Apply underwriting authority and guidelines, exercising sound judgment and managing exceptions appropriately
  • Analyze agency portfolios to identify trends, risks, and growth opportunities; build and execute strategies that improve profitability and portfolio quality
  • Build and strengthen agency relationships by serving as a primary contact for assigned agents and delivering exceptional service
  • Communicate underwriting appetite and decisions clearly, improving engagement, trust, and hit ratios
  • Partner with agents and Business Development Representatives to uncover opportunities and support strategic growth
  • Develop and execute agency visitation plans to deepen relationships and drive results
  • Research, document, and resolve complex underwriting issues, providing clear, actionable solutions and technical expertise
  • Monitor industry and market trends, including competitor products and rate activity, to inform underwriting decisions and positioning
  • Serve as a technical resource with deep knowledge of products, pricing, guidelines, and underwriting philosophy
  • Collaborate across teams to support production, service, and quality goals
  • Mentor and support less experienced underwriters, including reviewing referrals and providing constructive feedback
  • Participate in cross-functional initiatives, committees, and specialized areas (e.g., reinsurance, filings, hearings)
  • Adapt underwriting depth and responsiveness based on account size, complexity, and opportunity


Travel required as needed to support agency relationships.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience
  • 4-6 years of Commercial Lines underwriting experience (or 6-8 years with an Associate degree or equivalent)
  • Strong understanding of insurance industry practices, underwriting principles, and risk evaluation across complex accounts
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions within broad authority, using sound business judgment and analytical thinking
  • Proven success in managing agency relationships, negotiating effectively, and delivering high-quality service
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to team success and taking a leadership role on projects or initiatives
  • Advanced problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to develop practical, innovative solutions
  • Strong communication, organization, and time management skills, with an ability to prioritize and adapt
  • Experience mentoring or guiding others and acting as a technical resource
  • Professional designations (AU) and progress toward CPCU or CIC preferred


Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by several factors including skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. Some roles at Mapfre are eligible for commission and/or bonus earnings, in addition to salary, calculated based upon factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

Salary Range $78,000-$120,000
