Job Description

Overview

The Nuclear Business Unit at AtkinsRéalis is seeking an experienced Commercial Director to provide senior commercial leadership across Nuclear New Build opportunities and major project development initiatives.

We are looking for a commercially astute leader with experience in engineering services, project development, complex contracting, and strategic commercial governance. The successful candidate will bring the judgement, confidence, and collaborative leadership required to shape commercial solutions, influence senior stakeholders, and support growth in a highly regulated nuclear environment.

This role offers a significant platform to help shape Candu’s domestic and international nuclear new build agenda, working with clients, partners, governments, and internal executive teams on major opportunities. It is suited to a senior commercial professional motivated by strategic influence, long-term value creation, and the development of enduring client and partner relationships.

In an evolving energy market, the Commercial Director will play a leading role in enabling business growth while protecting AtkinsRéalis’ commercial position and balancing opportunity, risk, and long-term financial performance. The role requires discretion, sound commercial judgement, and access to confidential information to support medium- and long-term business planning.

Your role

  • Leads commercial strategy development in collaboration with the VP of New Build, Engineering, Project Delivery, Finance, and Business Development teams, including the preparation and review of business cases, proposals, commercial contracts, subcontracts, and other key agreements.
  • Shapes commercial strategies for partnerships, funding models, intellectual property investment recovery, client engagement, and government-facing commercial approaches.
  • Owns the identification, analysis, escalation, and mitigation of material commercial risks and liabilities across business cases, proposals, active projects, and supplier agreements.
  • Works with technical and legal teams to establish robust commercial positions for the development, protection, use, and licensing of intellectual property.
  • Provides senior commercial direction across technical, risk, legal, cost estimating, insurance, bonding, taxation, treasury, finance, and procurement interfaces.
  • Represents AtkinsRéalis with clients, partners, regulators, government stakeholders, and other external parties, managing sensitive matters professionally while protecting AtkinsRéalis’ interests.
  • Provides senior commercial support for contract administration, entitlement strategy, claim prevention, narrative development, and the resolution of commercial disputes.
  • Works with procurement leadership to ensure appropriate flow down of prime contract obligations into subcontracts, supplier agreements, and related commercial arrangements.
  • Advises project teams on the interpretation of contract language, commercial obligations, risk allocation, and governance requirements.
  • Participates in steering committee and senior governance meetings, ensuring decisions, actions, commercial positions, and follow-up items are clearly captured and progressed.

About you

  • University degree in Engineering, Finance or Law, with experience in a similar role in Nuclear & Power, Oil & Gas or Industrial Sectors.
  • Professional/Chartered Professional within chosen field of expertise (Engineering, Finance, Law, Project Management etc.)
  • Experience of working with Clients/Projects internationally (cross-boundary)
  • Experience in project development in financing and due diligence activities
  • Experience in project and program development and management, preferably within the engineering services sector or an OEM environment.
  • Experience in commercial governance, bidding, contract management and project delivery.
  • Experience communicating with senior executives, clients, partners, subcontractors, project teams, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of client organizations, objectives, stakeholders, decision-making environments, and commercial drivers.
  • Ability to present complex commercial information clearly at both executive summary and detailed working levels.
  • Proven ability to organize, set priorities and handle multiple complex tasks at one time consistent with corporate processes.
  • Ability to reconcile usually disparate objectives of buyer and seller as contracting parties.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take the initiative.
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills.
  • Superior communication and writing skills.
