Overview

Under the direction of the SVP Chief Credit Risk Officer, the Commercial Credit Underwriting Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of the Commercial Credit Underwriting team.

 

The Commercial Credit Underwriting Manager supervises a team of credit analysts who are responsible for analyzing and interpreting financial and credit information of prospective commercial new money loan requests, material loan modifications, renewals and annual relationship reviews. A credit approval memorandum will be prepared by the credit analyst, which is used to make credit decisions by required approval authorities. The Manager will review this memorandum for accuracy and completeness along with any associated information such as industry data, appraisals and environmental reports before releasing them to the credit approvers.

 

This position requires strong; commercial credit and underwriting skills (CRE & C&I), writing skills, oral communication skills, organizational skills, and managerial experience. The Commercial Credit Underwriting Manager also ensures compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and BankNewport  policies and procedures. Will work collaboratively in conjunction with Credit Administration team.

 

This is a hybrid position with some travel to other RI locations as needed for training/meetings.

Responsibilities

 

  • Assign loans to credit analysts and manages the daily workflow of the commercial credit underwriting pipeline, meeting deadlines. Ensures high quality analysis results and timely completion of all credit approval memorandums.  
  • Reviews and analyzes commercial credit approval memorandums for accuracy. A solid understanding of commercial lending and credit underwriting principles will help ensure the highest loan quality to the Bank.
  • Assign risk ratings as appropriate.
  • Accurately identify loan policy exceptions and any red flags during the underwriting process.
  • Underwrites, from time to time, complex commercial loan requests.
  • Serves as a resource for credit policy and procedure interpretation for commercial lending officers and business bankers.
  • Partners with direct reports, providing training and coaching as needed.
  • Collaborate with commercial loan officers and business bankers on loan requests; assists in structuring, terms and conditions, need for information, offering assistance and resolution.
  • Ensures adherence to banking regulations (State and Federal), Bank policy and procedures. Advises management of compliance issues in a pro-active manner.
  • Establishes, promotes and practices strong collaboration efforts within the department and with the various lending business lines as well as other employees and customers of the Bank, to further grow and enhance the quality of the loan portfolio.
  • Hosts weekly pipeline call with commercial lending team.
  • Recommend improvements to Bank policies and procedures. Ensures that any changes meet regulatory guidelines and are successfully implemented.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs required. Familiarity with nCino or other loan platform software helpful.
  • Maintains a growth mindset by offering innovative solutions in deploying team resources and technology.
  • Other duties or responsibilities, as assigned.

Qualifications

 

Extensive commercial credit experience: Bachelor’s degree in a related field or relevant work experience with 7 to 10 years of credit underwriting, and credit and portfolio management experience in the Banking industry. Must have managerial or team lead experience. Formal Commercial Credit trained preferred.  Excellent analytical, managerial, planning, organizational, communication (written & oral), decision making skills, and technological skills including experience using Microsoft Office programs and nCino.
