The Clinical Safety Leader is part of the Patient Safety team within Alberta Health Services' provincial Quality and Healthcare Improvement portfolio. Working across diverse healthcare environments, this role partners with staff, physicians, and leaders at all levels to strengthen patient safety practices and foster a culture of quality improvement. The Clinical Safety Leader also works with patients and families to incorporate their experiences and perspectives into the review of hazards, close calls, and clinical adverse events. Using systems thinking and Just Culture principles, the role supports clinical teams in implementing patient safety programs and conducting reviews of safety events. The focus is on creating psychologically safe environments for learning, identifying opportunities for improvement, and identifying changes that make care safer for patients, families, and healthcare providers.

Description:

Reporting to the provincial Manager, Patient Safety, the Clinical Safety Leader partners with site and program leaders to address priority patient safety issues and advance a culture of safety across the organization. The role builds the capacity of clinical teams to identify, analyze, and respond to patient safety hazards, close calls, and clinical adverse events using systems thinking and Just Culture principles. Through analysis of patient safety data, the Clinical Safety Leader identifies trends and prioritizes risks that may lead to patient harm, supporting system-level improvements and helping leaders strengthen patient safety programs within their clinical areas. A key responsibility of this role is supporting the work of Quality Assurance Committees. This includes mentoring Committee Chairs, leading and supporting quality assurance reviews (QARs) using systems analysis methodologies and reviewing patient safety data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement. Additional responsibilities may include developing and delivering patient safety education, collaborating with subject matter experts to create safety communications such as Safety Alerts, and supporting organization-wide patient safety initiatives (e.g. Canadian Patient Safety Week campaign). The Clinical Safety Leader fosters psychologically safe environments where people can openly discuss safety concerns, learn from mistakes, and examine system factors that contribute to risk and harm. Required Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science Degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. nursing, allied health discipline, human factors). Minimum of 5 years progressive experience in a large and complex healthcare environment. Demonstrated interest in patient safety. Experience implementing and integrating system wide initiatives. Strong understanding of health care systems, quality improvement and performance measurement. Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills with the ability to facilitate group discussion and learning.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in a relevant discipline. Experience with safety reviews and quality improvement. Project management training. QHI Patient Safety Certificate or similar (e.g. IHI Open School Q&PS, Canadian Patient Safety Officer) Ability to travel within Calgary and South Corridors.
