Job Summary

The ORI Director of Data Strategy and Analytics provides strategic leadership for the research data and analytics enterprise of the Overdose Research Institute (ORI) within the University of Michigan Medical School Department of Anesthesiology and the Overdose Prevention Engagement Network (OPEN). The position is responsible for advancing the University's data infrastructure to support overdose, substance use disorder, pain, and related health services research through innovative data integration, advanced analytics, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Working closely with Medical School faculty, clinicians, researchers, analysts, and external partners, the Director leads the development of the Michigan Integrated Overdose Data Repository, oversees analytic operations and staff, and provides strategic consultation on research design, data acquisition, evaluation, and impact measurement. The position serves as a key resource for faculty seeking to leverage institutional and statewide data assets to generate preliminary evidence, strengthen grant competitiveness, evaluate implementation initiatives, and translate research into improvements in clinical care, public health, and policy.

As a senior member of the ORI leadership team, this position develops data strategy, establishes governance and analytic standards, supervises analytics personnel, cultivates strategic partnerships, and advances collaborative research initiatives that position the University of Michigan as a national leader in overdose, substance use disorder, and implementation science research.

This is a hybrid position, requiring 2 days per week on-site at the North Campus Research Complex in Ann Arbor.

Responsibilities*

Data Strategy & Research Infrastructure (30%)

• Develop and execute the strategic vision, priorities, and roadmap for ORI's research data and analytics portfolio in alignment with the Medical School, Department of Anesthesiology, and OPEN strategic goals.
• Lead the development, governance, and expansion of the Michigan Integrated Overdose Data Repository by integrating clinical, public health, claims, and community-based data to support research, evaluation, quality improvement, and implementation science.
• Establish data governance frameworks, policies, and processes that ensure responsible data stewardship, regulatory compliance, secure data sharing, and adherence to institutional and external data use requirements.
• Identify opportunities to expand institutional data assets and improve faculty access to research data through sustainable, efficient data infrastructure.
• Serve as the institutional resource for research data governance, regulatory compliance, and best practices related to data acquisition, linkage, analysis, and dissemination.

Research Analytics & Faculty Collaboration (25%)

• Partner with faculty investigators, trainees, and research teams to develop study designs, analytic strategies, outcome measures, and data acquisition plans that strengthen research and grant competitiveness.
• Lead the development of preliminary analyses, pilot data, and evaluation frameworks that support research, implementation initiatives, and future funding opportunities.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to evaluate the impact of clinical, implementation, population health, and policy initiatives through meaningful performance measurement and advanced analytics.
• Develop reports, dashboards, visualizations, and other analytic products that effectively communicate findings to researchers, clinicians, health system leaders, policymakers, funders, and community partners.
• Identify and implement innovative analytic methods, technologies, and data sources that advance research, evaluation, and scientific discovery.

Research Partnerships & Scientific Development (20%)

• Develop strategic partnerships across the University, healthcare systems, governmental agencies, community organizations, and national collaborators to expand research opportunities, data resources, and external funding.
• Serve as a strategic resource by connecting faculty investigators with institutional data assets, analytic expertise, collaborative research opportunities, and evaluation resources.
• Collaborate with investigators on grant development by providing data strategy, analytic planning, preliminary analyses, and evaluation frameworks that strengthen funding competitiveness.
• Lead collaborative data initiatives and oversee data use agreements supporting research, evaluation, and quality improvement activities.
• Represent ORI and OPEN through presentations, committees, and collaborative workgroups while translating research findings into actionable information that informs clinical practice, public health, and policy.
  
  Leadership & Program Management (15%)
• Provide strategic leadership, supervision, mentoring, and professional development for analytics personnel while establishing priorities and coordinating resources across multiple research and evaluation initiatives.
• Establish analytic standards, operational procedures, and quality assurance processes that promote efficient, reproducible, and high-quality analytic work.
• Provide technical expertise and guidance on analytic methodologies, statistical approaches, data management, and reporting standards.
• Collaborate with ORI and OPEN leadership on strategic planning, budgeting, staffing, and long-term program development.
• Monitor project progress, deliverables, timelines, and resource utilization to ensure successful completion of institutional priorities and sponsored projects.
  
  Administrative & Institutional Leadership (10%)
• Develop and maintain documentation related to data governance, analytic standards, operational procedures, and research workflows.
• Contribute to strategic planning, annual reporting, grant development, and institutional initiatives that advance ORI's mission and the University's research enterprise.
• Participate in institutional committees, leadership initiatives, and professional activities related to research, analytics, implementation science, and data strategy.
• Complete supervisory responsibilities in accordance with University policies and perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

• Master's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Services Research, Informatics, Data Science, Healthcare Administration, or a closely related field.
• Seven (7) or more years of progressively responsible experience leading healthcare analytics, clinical research, implementation science, health services research, or quality improvement initiatives within an academic medical center, healthcare organization, government agency, or comparable environment.
• Demonstrated experience leading strategic data initiatives, research infrastructure, and analytic programs that support scientific research, program evaluation, quality improvement, and organizational decision-making.
• Extensive experience working with large clinical, administrative, claims, public health, or other healthcare datasets, including data acquisition, integration, governance, and regulatory compliance.
• Demonstrated experience providing strategic consultation to faculty investigators, organizational leadership, and multidisciplinary teams regarding research design, analytics, evaluation, and data strategy.
• Experience supporting externally funded research through study design, analytic planning, preliminary analyses, grant development, and evaluation methodologies.
• Demonstrated leadership supervising professional staff, managing complex projects, and building collaborative partnerships across academic, healthcare, governmental, and community organizations.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate complex analytic findings into actionable information for diverse technical and non-technical audiences.

Desired Qualifications*

• Experience leading enterprise-wide or statewide healthcare analytics or research initiatives involving multiple organizations and stakeholders.
• Experience developing or managing integrated research data repositories or enterprise data infrastructure.
• Experience working with Medicare, Medicaid, commercial claims, electronic health records, Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP), emergency medical services (EMS), medical examiner, or other large administrative and clinical datasets.
• Experience supporting federally funded, state-funded, foundation, or industry-sponsored research through analytic leadership, research infrastructure development, or grant preparation.
• Record of scholarly activity through peer-reviewed publications, scientific presentations, or other research dissemination.
• Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary faculty investigators and representing an organization through scientific presentations, advisory committees, or national partnerships.
• Proficiency with statistical programming languages (e.g., SAS, SQL, R, STATA) and data visualization or business intelligence tools.
