Manager, Claims - Liability & Property Damage

Location: South Sioux City, NE

Summary

As the Manager, Claims - Liability & Property Damage, you will provide leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight for a team of claims professionals handling liability and property damage claims. This role is responsible for driving claim quality, developing talent, improving operational performance, and ensuring fair, consistent claim outcomes. You will serve as both a people leader and technical claims expert, partnering across the organization to deliver exceptional customer service, effective claims management, and strong financial results.

What You'll Do

Claims Leadership & Strategy
  • Lead and execute claim handling strategies that support organizational objectives, customer service standards, and financial performance goals.
  • Drive consistent application of best practices in coverage analysis, liability assessment, reserving, investigation, negotiation, and claim resolution.
  • Monitor claim trends, emerging exposures, litigation activity, and loss drivers to identify opportunities for operational and claims process improvements.
  • Ensure appropriate reserving practices and financial stewardship across the team's portfolio.
  • Partner with senior claims leadership on departmental initiatives, strategic priorities, workflow optimization, and change management efforts.
  • Analyze operational metrics, quality reviews, and performance data to improve outcomes, increase efficiency, and reduce claim costs.
  • Support large-loss and complex claim management through strategy development, settlement planning, and claim resolution guidance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve litigation management strategies and claim outcomes through collaboration with internal and external partners.

Team Leadership & Development
  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop a team of Liability and Property Damage Claims Adjusters.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings, performance discussions, and career development planning.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, collaboration, and customer focus.
  • Provide technical guidance and support on complex coverage, liability, negotiation, and litigation matters.
  • Create development plans that build technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and overall employee engagement.
  • Recognize performance, address performance concerns, and support employee growth through ongoing coaching and feedback.

Claims Operations
  • Review and audit claim files to ensure quality, compliance, reserving accuracy, and adherence to company standards.
  • Monitor workloads and resource allocation to ensure timely and effective claim handling.
  • Troubleshoot escalated claims and operational challenges while identifying solutions that support positive business outcomes.
  • Ensure claims are handled in compliance with state regulations, company guidelines, and industry best practices.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance both customer and employee experiences.

Business Partnership
  • Collaborate with Safety, Underwriting, Legal, Risk Management, and other business partners to identify trends and mitigate future loss exposure.
  • Provide analysis and recommendations regarding claim activity, loss trends, and operational performance.
  • Participate in workforce planning, hiring, succession planning, and organizational development initiatives.
  • Support the development and implementation of training programs, procedures, and departmental best practices.

Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of claims adjusting experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of liability and property damage claims handling, coverage analysis, investigation, reserving, and settlement practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and influence others.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze claim trends, performance metrics, and operational data to drive business decisions.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed.

Preferred
  • Previous supervisory, management, or team leadership experience.
  • Experience leading liability and property damage claims operations.
  • Experience managing complex, litigated, or high-exposure claims.
  • Insurance industry designations such as CPCU, AIC, SCLA, or similar certifications.
  • Experience with change management, process improvement, and operational leadership initiatives.
  • Transportation, trucking, or commercial insurance claims experience.
