Job Description Summary

Our team handles some of the most unique and interesting insurance claims at Nationwide. Do you have deep insurance industry knowledge, good negotiation skills and understand litigation? If you like variety and complexity in your work, have desire to collaborate and bring equitable resolution to reinsurance claims, we want to hear from you!

As a Claims Specialist, you'll administer and coordinate enterprise-assumed and ceded reinsurance treaties and programs. You'll analyze related treaties and claims, identify and evaluate appropriate disposition of asbestos, environmental and other complex claims arising from assumed or ceded reinsurance programs. You may specialize in assumed claims or ceded claims and will typically be cross trained in other functions.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Functions as primary contact with ceding companies, reinsurers, brokers and also interacts with third-party administrators to ensure accurate and timely handling of claims. Collaborates regularly to set priorities and follow up with involved parties to ensure company interests are being pursued and protected.

  • Effectively engages challenging ceding companies and reinsurers. Communicates claim and treaty issues clearly and persuasively, both verbally and in writing. Drives appropriate resolution of disputed claim matters and ensures accurate, timely, and complete communication with reinsurers.

  • Handles the disbursement and receipt of cash and administers Letters of Credit. Makes sure proper allocation to reinsurance contracts involved.

  • Identifies and establishes new claims. Calculates and issues appropriate reserve change or billing notices, based on terms and conditions of retrocessional contracts.

  • Analyzes claim presentations including assessments of related contracts to validate coverage, liability, and other contract terms, resulting in initial claims approval or rejection. Responsible for review and approval decision on a variety of ceding company accounts. Negotiates resolutions to billing, documentation and treaty issues.

  • Monitorsclaimsto closure. Performs continuous review of assigned claims inventory. Follows the investigation of the reinsured and suggestsadditionalareas or means of investigation, ifindicated.Acquiresnecessary information and documentation to support ceding company settlement decisions and payments.

  • Submits severe incident reports, reinsurance reports and other information to home office, claims management, underwriting, and actuarial.

  • Partners with Special Investigation Unit and National Recovery to identify fraud and subrogation opportunities.

  • Supports and partners with Technical Reinsurance Claim Specialists regarding claim, contract and account issues. Provides detailed analysis and reconciliations as requested.

  • Performs analysis and creates management reports, including commutation and insolvency studies, as well as collection priorities/strategy. Also provides analysis and creates reports for Finance, Actuarial and regulatory agencies.

  • Delivers an outstanding customer service experience to all internal, external, current and prospective Nationwide customers.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Claims Administrative Manager.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience preferred. Successful completion of required claims certification schools/courses preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: State licensing where required. Studies toward professional designations such as ARE, CPCU preferred.

Experience: Four or more years of claims or related experience, with experience in reinsurance preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: In-depth knowledge of property casualty and/or life/health underwriting practices and policies/policy content. Proven knowledge of technical nomenclature and various state regulations. Knowledge of brokerage placement procedure practices and processes preferred. In-depth knowledge of reinsurance contracts, ceded claims processes and legal aspects of reinsurance claims desired. Proven ability to meet customer needs and provide outstanding service by informing customers of the claims process and ensuring a positive customer experience. Strong judgment and decision-making abilities. Demonstrated ability to manage several priorities and to handle claims involving a number of different lines of business (products liability, workers compensation, automobile, property etc.). Advanced verbal and written communication skills for interaction with ceding companies, brokers, reinsurers, counsel and other internal and external customers.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, proficiencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the business unit executive and Human Resources.

Working Conditions: Work from home environment. Occasional travel. May require working extended or non-standard hours based on business needs.
