A little bit about the role...CJGeo is hiring a Director of Finance to run the day-to-day of our finance and accounting function and build the systems that don't exist yet. This is not a strategy-only executive seat. We need someone who owns construction job costing and WIP, AIA billing, cash and treasury, forecasting, and our lender and bonding relationships. We are looking for someone who is just as comfortable building a process from scratch as they are reviewing a financial statement.
Just as important as the technical scope is the leadership this role brings. Our accounting team is talented and tenured, and this person will build on that foundation as a steady and proactive leader who invests in mentorship and collaboration, earns the team's trust, and leads with clarity and follow-through.
The Director of Finance will be responsible for:
Construction Accounting & Job Costing- Owning month-end close, financial statements, and accurate job costing and WIP reporting.
- Building out our Foundation ERP to properly run estimated-versus-actual, percent-complete, and AIA billing.
- Fixing the change-order workflow so change orders consistently reach accounting.
- Bridging the disconnect between project management and accounting.
Cash, Treasury & Risk- Building cash flow forecasting from the ground up, taking over weekly cash and AP spend decisioning, and serving as a sounding board on capital decisions, equipment purchases, and expansion.
- Owning our line of credit relationship, covenant tracking, and on-time lender reporting.
- Reinstating a real customer credit policy to reduce AR exposure and non-paying customers.
- Managing banking, treasury, the credit card program, bonding, and corporate insurance relationships.
Systems & Process Ownership- Taking ownership of Foundation as the system of record and driving adoption across departments.
- Cleaning up inventory accounting and standing up a workable inventory system.
- Designing and proactively improving repeatable processes.
Team Leadership & Interdepartmental Influence- Providing hands-on day-to-day management - coaching, developing, and mentoring the team.
- Being a direct, unflappable partner to leadership - bringing decisions, not just problems, to the table.
- Carrying the standing to delegate work across departments and hold people to it.
- Serving as a sounding board on company policy, partnering with both of CJGeo's owner-principals to align their thinking.
- Owning HR on an interim basis and taking on officer-level duties as appropriate: EEO officer, 401(k) and benefits administrator, and IRS point of contact.
We are excited about you because you...Bring real, hands-on finance leadership- Have 10+ years in accounting and finance, with deep command of job costing, WIP, percent-complete, AIA and progress billing, and retainage, or strong enough fundamentals to ramp quickly.
- Have hands-on ERP ownership experience (Foundation a strong plus), plus treasury, banking, covenant, bonding, and lender reporting experience.
- Have built or cleaned up a finance function before, not just operated inside one that was already running well.
Lead people well- Have a genuine track record as a strong people manager, this matters more to us than industry pedigree.
- Are emotionally intelligent, proactive, and adaptable, and know how to hold a team accountable while earning its trust.
- Have managed a team through a period of meaningful company growth.
Know how to operate and get things done- Identify problems independently and bring solutions, not just flag issues and wait for direction.
- Operate through influence and steadiness rather than title alone, and can be direct without being a bulldozer.
- Are comfortable with ambiguity and building structure where none exists today.
We're especially excited if you...- Have construction or another project-based industry background.
- Are a CPA, or have a strong public accounting or consulting background and are ready to move into a hands-on private industry seat.
- Bring multi-state, union and non-union, or prevailing wage payroll familiarity.
To be successful at CJGeo, you must be:- Proactive + Solution-Oriented: You spot problems before you're told about them and show up with a plan.
- Steady + Unflappable: You stay calm under pressure and can deliver a hard message without losing your composure or anyone else's trust.
- Adaptable + Growth-Minded: You're comfortable with ambiguity and energized by building something that doesn't fully exist yet.
- Direct + Trustworthy: You say what needs to be said, respectfully and clearly, and people know they can count on your word.
- Hands-On + Detail-Oriented: You're just as comfortable in the weeds of a reconciliation as you are in a conversation about strategy.
Reasons it pays to work at CJGeo (in addition to the pay itself)...- Medical, dental, and vision coverage
- 401(k) retirement plan with a company match
- Company-paid life, AD&D, and short- and long-term disability insurance
- Voluntary life, critical illness, and accident insurance options, with family coverage available
- Paid time off that grows with tenure
- Paid company holidays annually, including an extra day around Christmas
- A hybrid schedule, typically three days a week in our Williamsburg office where the accounting team is based
- The chance to join a growing, family-owned business in its second generation, with real room to shape how the finance function is built
Research shows women and people of color are less likely to apply unless they meet every qualification and we think that's a problem. If this role excites you, but your experience doesn't perfectly match every requirement, we still encourage you to apply. Our hiring philosophy looks to weed candidates INTO our process, not weed them out! Who knows, you may be just the right candidate for a future role inside or outside of the Sandbox.
