Full Job Description
Purpose of Position:

The Chief Sustainability Officer is a senior leader who advances Amalgamated Bank's environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy by integrating sustainability into client engagement, corporate advocacy, public communications, disclosures, and business execution. This role works across management, employees, customers, regulators, investors, and other stakeholders to strengthen the Bank's leadership position, support transparent and credible sustainability reporting, and deepen relationships in the environmental and sustainable business sector.

Essential Job Functions:
  1. Leads and evolves Amalgamated Bank's corporate sustainability and corporate social responsibility strategy in alignment with regulatory expectations, business objectives, and brand positioning.
  2. Serves as a visible public representative of the Bank's leadership through speaking engagements, media opportunities, industry events, stakeholder forums, and thought leadership, including serving in a governance role with organizations advancing the industry and the Bank's mission.
  3. Shapes and advances the Bank's sustainability advocacy agenda by engaging with industry groups, policymakers, investors, customers, and other external stakeholders on issues relevant to the Bank's mission and strategy.
  4. Oversees the development, governance, and continuous improvement of sustainability-related disclosures, reports, presentations, and communications to ensure they are accurate, transparent, well-supported, and aligned with applicable standards and stakeholder expectations.
  5. Partners with credit, risk, and business teams to support revenue generation consistent with mission priorities by bringing sustainability expertise to client opportunities, sector analysis, portfolio discussions, and transaction-related decision-making where relevant.
  6. In coordination with Bank leadership, recommends and assess vendors,systems, processes, and controls to measure, monitor, and report sustainability and ESG data.
  7. Assesses and analyzes Bank policies, products, and processes to identify opportunities to strengthen alignment with the Bank's sustainability commitments and business strategy.
  8. Meets with employees, customers, investors, analysts, and regulators to gather input, build alignment, and reinforce credible, transparent reporting and engagement.
  9. Evaluates the effectiveness of sustainability programs and initiatives, recommending and implementing improvements as needed to increase impact and execution quality.
  10. Drafts and supervises materials preparation for executive leadership, the Chief Executive Officer, the Board of Directors, and Board committees, including proposals, updates, disclosures, and strategic recommendations.
  11. Oversees the current portfolio of environmental sector clients and identifies, develops, and deepens customer relationships in the sector.
  12. Maintains appropriate documentation and records, including sustainability reports, governance materials, budgets, committee materials, and related supporting documentation, and performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Requirements:
  1. Minimum of 5+ years of relevant environmental, sustainability, ESG, or related strategic leadership experience, preferably within financial services or a regulated environment.
  2. Thorough and current knowledge of bank sustainability practices, sustainability disclosure frameworks, and applicable laws, regulations, and stakeholder expectations.
  3. Demonstrated ability to lead external engagement and represent an organization effectively with investors, regulators, customers, industry groups, policymakers, and the media.
  4. Strong experience drafting, reviewing, and overseeing sustainability-related disclosures, reports, presentations, and other communications with a high degree of accuracy and judgment.
  5. Ability to support and influence the credit process by applying sustainability expertise to sector analysis, client engagement, transaction evaluation, and cross-functional decision-making.
  6. Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills, including the ability to tailor messages to executive, board, public, and technical audiences.
  7. Strong analytical, strategic, and creative problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify relevant information and translate it into action.
  8. Excellent organizational skills, sound judgment, and close attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain high-quality documentation and follow-through.


Our job titles may span more than one career level. The starting base salary for this role is between $215,000 - $235,000. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferrable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.

Hybrid Work Model
Effective February 18, 2025, employees in office-based positions will be working a Hybrid work schedule consisting of three days or more, on-site per week, Monday - Thursday, although the specific days may vary by site or organization, with Friday designated as a remote-working day, unless business critical tasks require an on-site presence. This Hybrid work model does not apply to, and daily in-person attendance is required for, the contact center, branch service roles, and general services where the work to be performed is located at a Company site; positions covered by a collective-bargaining agreement (unless the agreement provides for hybrid work); or any other position for which the Company has determined the job requirements cannot be reasonably met working remotely. Please note, this Hybrid work model guidance does not apply to roles that have been designated as "remote".
