Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Chief Operating Officer, you will serve at the executive level, strategically leading operations across designated service lines, including Surgery Services, Heart & Vascular, Transplant, and associated support areas to foster a culture of excellence and ensure high-quality, efficient care. In this capacity, you will be responsible for providing leadership, strategic direction, and overall operational management for these disciplines, collaborating with executive leadership to drive organizational goals and achieve financial and clinical outcomes.

 

Every day you will be responsible for increasing organizational effectiveness and revenue, managing annual operating budgets, and maintaining productivity standards to ensure sufficient staff availability. You will have primary responsibility for establishing and ensuring clinical and surgical patient care standards are achieved in a cost-effective manner consistent with hospital goals, while providing a practice environment to assure CHI St. Luke's as an employer of choice. Additionally, you will hold authority for meeting the bottom lines of quality and financial performance, ensuring customer loyalty as measured by patient satisfaction, and maintaining compliance with regulatory standards through collaborative physician relationships.

 

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate exceptional operational leadership, the ability to build collaborative relationships, and superior communication skills required to influence strategic direction. You will effectively champion clinical and financial initiatives, fostering an environment of continuous improvement and patient-centered excellence across the organization.

 

  • Participates in decision-making processes by collaborating with leaders from the governing body, health system management, hospital leadership council, medical staff, and clinical areas in developing strategic plans, budgets, and policies.
  • Sets strategic direction for the assigned areas, including planning and managing processes and services to meet current and future needs, while supporting the organization's vision, mission, and strategies.
  • Mentors and develops managers and staff to assume leadership roles both formally and informally, via role modeling and facilitating staff participation in a shared leadership structure.
  • Plans, promotes, and conducts quality monitoring and enhancement activities, actively advancing clinical outcomes within the framework of the organization's Performance Improvement Plan.
  • Advocates for clinical and surgical staff regarding the allocation of resources including FTEs, systems, equipment, and support, and manages operating and capital budgets.
  • Provides for the establishment and implementation of patient care standards including policies and procedures that meet national, state, and local rules and regulations as well as voluntary accreditation standards.
  • Directs creative strategies to lower costs while maintaining or enhancing quality.
  • Leads in contract negotiation and administration for contracted services.
  • Demonstrates and creates an expectation of consistency in the application of HR policies and procedures across departments.
