Description

The Chief of Staff & Public Information Officer position will provide support and counsel on complex strategic and operational issues for Campus Safety. This position coordinates projects and activities between leaders and other stakeholders. This role involves strategic planning, managing organizational change, internal/external communication, and coordinating cross-functional activities. Additionally, this position serves as the first point of contact for all media requests, while also working with campus partners to enhance communication on campus through social media, web updates, marketing materials, and other communication channels. This position is not eligible for University sponsorship for employment authorization.

Duties Include:

  • Coordinates the implementation of campus wide initiatives such as the Campus Safety realignment, Reimagining Campus Safety, and University Crisis Communications Plan.
  • Provide Administrative or functional supervision to Administrative Services Coordinator as well as student employees/interns.
  • Leading all planning, development, and design of next iteration departmental website, ensuring compliance with Clery and other security needs.
  • Leads review of all existing departmental communication assets and works with central communication partners to develop a strategy for communicating about campus safety that can be applied across campus on multiple channels, ensuring students receive consistent information from recruitment to graduation.


Location: Campus Safety, University Capitol Centre, Iowa City, IA

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm, * Ability to be available on-call and during weekends and holidays as needed

Salary: $90,000 to commensurate

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, Business Administration, Communications, Marketing or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience (typically 5 years) in communications, project management or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with senior leaders/executives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills necessary for interactions with university faculty, administrators as well as representatives from other higher education institutions, government agencies and entities.
  • Ability to work strategically and collaboratively across departments.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to respond to high pressure circumstances quickly and calmly.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Ability to be available on-call and during weekends and holidays as needed.


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of public relations principles and practices as they pertain to the internal and external communication needs of a public safety organization.
  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and presenting information.
  • Experience writing talking points and providing media training.
