CPS is an interdisciplinary science department comprising Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences, and Astronomy. Our vibrant research labs examine questions such as how cells are programmed, how proteins function, how we develop materials for human health and sustainable future, how Earth's climate and biosphere change over time, how we monitor and predict natural hazards, and how students learn to approach these challenges. We offer undergraduate programs in Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences and Astronomy as well as interdisciplinary specializations in Biological Chemistry, Biomedical Physics, and Environmental Geoscience.

Our students have access to state-of-the-art teaching laboratories, are involved in cutting-edge research projects in our research labs and pursue internships at a broad range of technology companies across the GTA. Few departments can offer as wide an array of experiences as can CPS, from mapping in the Andes to simulating protein folding, to building a laser trap. Our department is home to 25 full-time faculty, including award-winning educators and researchers, who supervise a total of 90 graduate students and 16 postdocs in the CPS research labs. About 40% of our faculty have been hired in the last 10 years, the result of a recruitment and renewal drive that is ongoing.

The Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator position is an integral role in supporting our students in their lab work. The Coordinator will have a wide range of duties such as overseeing the day-to-day operational needs for one or more labs/workshops, providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on lab techniques, experimental procedures and protocols, liaising with colleagues to encourage the use of best practices and consistent programming, assessing student experiential learning needs, and providing safety training and ensuring compliance of lab procedures and standards.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Performing lab experiments that requires great precision and attention to many details
  • Ensuring that the material needs of laboratory exercises and/or courses are available
  • Coordinating routine maintenance of lab equipment
  • Analyzing lab reports and drafting content for funding applications and research papers
  • Providing safety training and ensuring compliance with lab safety procedures and standards
  • Approving purchases within established limits


Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum three years of work experience in a wet lab environment.
  • Carrying out all experiments to be done by students and documenting the results and provide the course instructor with data to facilitate grading of student lab reports.
  • Adapting/modifying experiments in collaboration with the course instructor. Researching and validating new lab techniques and experiments.
  • Costing out reagents for each experiment.
  • Creating and updating standard operating procedures for lab experiments and equipment.
  • Acting as a first-aid responder to ensure the health and safety of students and lab personnel.


Assets (Nonessential):

  • First Aid CPR, WHMIS, and BioSafety certification and training
  • Experience with coordinating undergraduate teaching labs
  • Master's degree in chemistry would be an asset
