ABOUT THE ROLE
The Charge Nurse (CN) provides clinical leadership and oversight of nursing services at the Fort McKay Health Centre. This position ensures the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care that integrates culturally sensitive practices and aligns with the community's values and traditions. The CN oversees the health centre team, coordinates patient care, and collaborates with community members, healthcare partners, and surrounding health services to improve health outcomes in the Fort McKay First Nation community.
KEY RESPONSIBLITIES
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provide direct patient care, including assessments, treatments, and medication administration, within scope of practice for Registered Nurses in Alberta.
- Act as a clinical resource for the nursing team, ensuring evidence-based and culturally appropriate care.
- Promote cultural safety and humility in all patient interactions and care practices, aligning with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action.
- Maintain accurate patient assessments, care plans, and interventions utilizing electronic medical record (EMR) systems including Netcare.
- Strong understanding of Alberta's Health Information Act (HIA) and demonstrated ability to handle confidential patient information in compliance with privacy regulations and organizational policies.
- Adhere to care plans to manage chronic diseases prevalent in Indigenous communities, such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular conditions, using evidence-based approaches as recommended in clinical care pathways.
- Ensure compliance with Alberta's mandatory reporting laws.
- Supervise and mentor nursing staff, promoting a cohesive and professional team environment.
- Oversee staffing levels, schedule management, and delegation of tasks to ensure efficient operations.
- Provide ongoing mentorship and training for staff on culturally competent and community-specific healthcare practices.
- Participate in hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluations of nursing staff.
- Promote and uphold Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards, including infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with community members, respecting their cultural beliefs and preferences.
- Act as a liaison between the health centre, provincial health (AHS), Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), and the community to ensure services align with local needs.
- Demonstrate cultural competence and humility in all interactions with patients, families, and the community.
- Ensure the highest standards of patient care, safety, and compliance with healthcare regulations and protocols and quality standards set by province (Alberta Health) and Indigenous Services Canada.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, data collection, and reporting to enhance healthcare delivery.
- Oversee inventory, resource management, and emergency response readiness, ensuring alignment with OHS standards.
- Adhere to policies and procedures for handling needles, sharps disposal, and other medical waste per Alberta guidelines.
- Advocate for community-specific health care needs, ensuring culturally safe health care practices are integrated.
- Foster and maintain relationships with healthcare partners and agencies serving the community.
- Stay current with advances in healthcare, Indigenous health practices, and cultural safety through ongoing professional development and training.
- Adapt to resource-limited settings and provide creative solutions to meet patient needs in a remote environment.
- Respond to medical emergencies and ensure the nursing team is trained in emergency protocols, including Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Perform administrative tasks, including staff supervision, scheduling, and reporting.
- Review and collaborate on plans with team as required for health centre operations in response to community situations including crisis or emergencies.

KEY REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required.
- A current and ongoing valid practice permit with College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) is required.
- Heart and Stroke Health Care Provider Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Completion of Indigenous awareness and sensitivity training is required.
- Certification(s) as may be required within the scope of the position
- Two (2) to five (5) years of direct patient care experience, including chronic disease management, primary care, or public health is required.
- Prior experience as a Charge Nurse, Team Leader, or Nurse Manager is required.
- Experience working in an Indigenous community including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values is a definite asset.
- Case management course is an asset.
- Familiarity with emergency response protocols, including Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and experience handling medical emergencies is an asset.
- Experience with administrative tasks such as scheduling, staffing, and resource management in a clinical setting.
- Experience or training in providing culturally competent care, including knowledge of traditional Indigenous healing practices, is an asset.
- Experience implementing quality improvement initiatives or contributing to healthcare service planning.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License with a Clean Driver's Abstract
- Able to provide a Clean Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector
