SUMMARY:

Under general direction, the Flow Coordinator is responsible for optimizing patient throughput in the Emergency Department. This role serves as the central communication hub between clinical staff, ancillary departments, and hospital admissions, coordinating patient movement from triage through disposition to minimize wait times, reduce overcrowding, and ensure high-quality, safe patient care.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinate the movement of patients from triage through treatment and disposition to minimize wait times and overcrowding. Continuously track patient status from arrival to disposition and prioritize movement based on acuity and capacity.

Monitor bed availability, staffing, and equipment to ensure efficient use of emergency department resources. Assign and reassign beds in real time to optimize space, reduce boarding, and support incoming patients.

Act as the central point of communication between physicians, nurses, ancillary services, and admissions to streamline care. Relay critical updates between clinical staff, ancillary departments, and admissions to keep care progressing.

Identify bottlenecks and implement strategies to improve patient throughput and reduce length of stay. Recognize overcrowding or delays early and activate surge protocols or notify leadership as needed.

Ensure patient care processes follow established protocols, prioritize high-acuity cases, and maintain compliance with safety standards. Monitor adherence to protocols and help remove barriers to timely treatment and discharge.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Knowledge of Alaska Tribal Health System, ANTHC, and Alaska Native culture(s).

Knowledge of emergency department operations, patient flow principles, and triage protocols.

Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of applications.

Skill in effective verbal and written communication across multidisciplinary teams.

Skill in operating electronic health record (EHR) and bed management systems.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with clinical and administrative staff.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks concurrently in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.

Ability to exercise sound judgment and decisiveness under pressure.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Non-supervisory - Four (4) years of nursing experience in an Emergency Department. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

Current registered nurse license in the State of Alaska. Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) required.

PREFERRED EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Experience in a charge nurse or patient flow coordination role. Familiarity with surge protocols and capacity management.

PREFERRED CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

According to the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain specific technical certifications and programming language skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

Requires persistent repetitive movements of the hands, wrists and fingers.

May require long periods of sitting, walking, standing, etc. throughout the shift. May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays. May be called out to work off-shift in emergency or surge situations. Must be able to lift approximately 25 pounds. Will be exposed to infectious diseases, hazardous equipment, and high-stress clinical situations.
