Position Title: CFD Engineer II

Position Location: Remote - work virtually from most locations in the United States

Job Summary

The CFD Engineer II will have the opportunity to work with and collaborate with senior design staff to advance their CFD skills for data center design and construction. They will learn, through hands-on application, how to design a wide variety of projects. This person will work as part of the Engineering Team and interact closely with the Project Management Team to produce construction documents, develop and edit project specifications and assist in the construction administration process.

The CFD Engineer II will receive general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new projects or assignments. May work independently consistently exercising discretion and independent judgment on individual work, or under immediate supervision. May serve as trade lead on routine projects of limited scope.

The CFD Engineer II will communicate and operate in line with organizational goals and values, as well as departmental objectives.

Essential Functions

CFD Analysis Documentation Management (30%)

  • Participate in the entire process of CFD analysis documentation, ensuring accuracy and adherence to project goals from initiation through to validation.
  • Utilize data center specific CFD software tools like Reality DC Design by Cadence, or equivalent (TileFlow, CoolSim, Autodesk CFD, etc.).
  • Utilize general CFD software like Star CCM+ for building / wind analysis or HVAC related equipment manufacturing.

Pre-Simulation Planning (30%)

  • Coordinate closely with design teams to refine simulation objectives, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of project requirements
  • Participate in discussions to define simulation prerequisites, collect necessary data, and establishing accurate initial conditions for simulations
  • Identify challenges and recommend modifications to design parameters or simulation setups, to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the simulation process

Simulation Execution and Validation (30%)

  • Coordinate activities between design, project management, and clients, to ensure effective communication and alignment of project objectives
  • Conduct technical discussions with clients, presenting simulation findings, interpret results, and provide insights for CFD analyses
  • Conduct rigorous validation of CFD results, employing advanced analytical techniques to ensure that simulations are both accurate and reflective of real-world conditions
  • Participate in the review process, identifying discrepancies, and recommending solutions to improve simulation fidelity and project outcomes.

Reporting (10%)

  • Prepare project progress reports for internal and external stakeholders
  • Update and maintain shop drawing and RFI log
  • Manage personal hours using company tools

Completion of Assigned Tasks and Deliverables on Time and on Budget

Position Requirements (Intermediate level for all the following)

  • Knowledge of fluid mechanics principles including boundary layers, laminar flows, and basic heat transfer
  • Knowledge of core numerical methods in CFD like finite volume and element methods
  • Knowledge of primary turbulence models and their applications
  • Skilled in using CFD software for simulations and reviewing drawings with AutoCAD/Revit.
  • Skilled in using CFD data center specific software tools, especially Reality DC Design by Cadence or its equivalent
  • Skilled in using general CFD software like Star CCM+ for steady-state and transient simulations
  • Skilled in 3D modeling and cleaning and preparing complex CAD for CFD modeling
  • Skilled in JAVA or Python scripting and comfortable with Linux and HPC systems preferred
  • Skilled at using MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams), along with exceptional organizational skills for file management
  • Skilled in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail
  • Ability to work successfully in a remote environment thru effective communication and organizational skills, self-motivation, proactiveness and resourcefulness in a distraction free workspace
  • Ability to interpret CFD results and communicate well in writing and verbally
  • Ability to follow company and site safety requirements
  • Ability to analyze and prepare documents, reports and correspondence
  • Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with moderate supervision
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet close deadlines
  • Organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

Travel / Relocation Requirements

  • Approximately 10%, this may include travel to any or all 50 US states
  • Travel is defined as physically leaving home on behalf of business activities including but not limited to client sites, meetings with other employees, meeting for business development purposes, running errands on behalf of the business, attending industry conferences, etc.


Education / Experience

  • Master's degree in engineering

  • Three to five years' experience in a consultancy setting.

The actual amount may differ based on non-discriminatory factors such as experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and location.

The pay range for this role is:

83,000 - 104,125 USD per year (Remote (United States))
