Description

Participate as a full-time physician extender in the Division of Infectious Diseases and in departmental and medical school activities. This position primarily participates in development and implementation of an inpatient service for Southern Illinois University School of Medicine Department of Internal Medicine including patient care, clinical teaching, and research components.

*This position is ON SITE only.*

Examples of Duties

Clinical Service: 100%
A. Manage individual patient care including:
1.Perform health status assessment by obtaining medical history and performing physical examination.
2.Order and interpret diagnostic studies.
3.Develop and implement treatment plan.
4.Perform other diagnostic, therapeutic or corrective measures as necessary.
B. Provide Infectious Diseases care for patients on the inpatient service.
1.Perform and document histories and examinations after initial consultations.
2.Perform and document daily evaluations, including targeted history and examination, review all cultures from current and past, and medication orders for established patients.
3.Serve as initial point of contact for physicians and services requesting inpatient Infectious Diseases consultation.
4.Coordinate inpatient care with fellows, residents, and students working on the Infectious Diseases service to prepare for morning rounds with the Infectious Disease attending physician.
5.Communicate in a timely manner significant change in patient status or treatment plan that impact management of infections with the Infectious Disease attending physician and/or Infectious Diseases fellow on service.
6.Document a brief discharge summary of changes to antibiotics and other medication, and post-hospital plans for the outpatient follow-up in Infectious Disease clinic and patient's primary care provider.
7.Obtain all reports of outside cultures, relevant labs, and information.
8.Co-ordinate discharge with social worker, discharge planners, home health, and infusion services; for IV antibiotics, outpatient labs, and any medications or labs needing pre-authorization.
C. Provide patient education and counseling to patients and their families.
D. Communicate with the physicians and/or fellows, providing a summary of the clinical data and discussing further evaluation and therapy as needed.
E. Communicate with referring physician and/or primary care physician regarding patient care issues after hospital discharge.
F. Maintain complete and accurate records of all care provided.
G. Submit appropriate billing information.
H. Any other responsibilities as assigned by Division Chief and/or physicians.
I. Outpatient clinic coverage as assigned including wound clinic.
J. Flex days to assist with weekend coverage up to 4 weekends in a year.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Received passing score on national certifying exam recognized by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
  • Ability to be licensed in the State of Illinois as a Nurse Practitioner or Current Illinois Certified Nurse Practitioner license.
  • Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Internal Medicine and/or Infectious Diseases experience preferred.
  • Two years clinical experience preferred.
  • Hospital experience preferred.
  • Research experience/interest preferred.
