Position: First Assist - Cardiovascular/CardiothoracicLocation: Munster, IN (Community Hospital) & Hobart, IN (St. Mary Medical Center)Job Summary:The Cardiovascular First Assist works directly under the cardiac surgeon(s) in the care and management of adult cardiovascular & thoracic patients. As a member of the surgical team, the CV First Assist serves as an assistant to physicians following established standards and practices. Provides diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive healthcare services, as delegated by surgeon(s). CV First Assist has duties on all adult aspects of cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgeries. Has the necessary knowledge to prepare and maintain a safe, sterile environment and the skills to perform primary scrub or second assist for surgical procedures all in a manner which supports the Standards of Surgical Care. Needs to be experienced and proficient in endoscopic vein harvesting, open vein harvesting, radial artery harvesting. Performs other related duties as assigned by the surgeon(s).
Education/Experience Requirements:- Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technology training program, as well as an accredited Surgical Assisting program. Previous military training that equals and congruent to surgical technology training is accepted as long individual holds a valid First Assist Certification.
- Must accumulate 15 hours of AST approved Continuing Education related to Surgical Technology per fiscal year (July 1 thru June 30).
- Maintain annual CPR Certification along with other mandatory competencies per hospital/department policy.
- Minimum 2 years cardiovascular experience required 5 years preferred.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), organizational skills, and attention to detail.
- Must be able to act calmly in stressful, high pressure situations.
